I was at a gun shop 3 weeks ago and bought some .223 at about .45 cents a round and that was the good stuff.. They were selling other low brand stuff (not wolf or bear), and it was averaging about .37 a round. It's not the range stuff that can be used at the range due to lead in the bullets themselves making them not as good for the backstops at the indoor range, but none the less still good ammo.
I'm assuming that you like to purchase ammo like 230 grain ammo for most of your guns. I'm cool with that stuff as well, but not when it comes to shooting trees and beer cans.
Greg, you're completely talking out of your duff here. I'm going to correct MANY things you just got wrong.
#1 - .223 ammo is not 230 grains. The standard rounds are 55 grain and 62 grain. The high end match stuff is 75 grain and sometimes 80 grain. If you want to see a 230 grain bullet, go buy some .45 cal handgun ammo.
#2 - Shooting lead bullets IS what the ranges want. They want the bullets to deform and disperse energy when hitting the backstop. What they DON'T want is steel-core ammo. It doesn't deform as much and therefore has a tendency to either over-penetrate or ricochet depending on the energy being carried at impact (related to the distance it is being shot). For lead core bullets, either the metal jacket shears off upon impact allowing the lead to deform and transfer energy, or the whole bullet deforms and the jacket stays in tact. Either way, the bullet goes "smush" and all is right with the world.
#3 - Rutz wasn't serious about it taking 3 days to clean a gun. Exaggeration/sarcasm at work there.
#4 - Yes, the cheap ammo is around $300/1k. Brown bear, Golden tiger, and the Wolf Military and Wolf Classic stuff are all pretty well in that price range, maybe a little cheaper.
#5 - If you're still paying $.45/round for .223 (pre-tax), you're getting screwed.
#6 - In your post you say "firing pins, etc". AR's only have a singular firing pin.
I'm sure you have good intentions in your post, but for the love of God please get your facts straight before saying stuff that doesn't make any sense.
And to Rutz... PMC (a good quality FMJ .223 round) is down to about $350/1k at some stores. There's tax of course, so that's about $380 all said.
