Does anyone have one of these beauties? I would like to get one of the Full Size with a blued barrel, I was looking at a Rem 700 PSS, which is about a grand, and I figured for 700 more I could get one of these and they're effective out to 800-1000 Yards so I could throw a scope on it and have a nice sniper rifle as well. This isn't something I would be getting anytime soon, I get the occasional computer gig setting up a network, building PC's and stuff for people so I thought I would put that $$ away when I get a chance and buy one as I've wanted one for years, and they just keep going up and up in price, I remember when they were only 900 bucks for the base model and now it's $1,600.. Anyways just curious if anyone had one and if they enjoyed it despite being a little on the spendy side.

I've shot them they're fun.

Great platform. Stupid expensive (considering obama is crushing all the surplus rifles).

I think boz has one.

I like them, but they are expensive all around. Quality scope mounts are going to cost close to $300 and if you dont use a quality mount why spend that kind of money on the gun and glass? I know some people dont like to buy used but the most expensive one I bought was $1400 OTD for the "target" one. All 3 were bought used.

Top: Springfield "loaded" $1400 for rifle, $300 Sadlak, Leupold scope rings, $1000 IOR 4-14x50 with MP8 Dot reticle, Wolf springs, Sadlak spring mount, Versa Mount rail

Middle: Springfield standard bought with cheep scope/mount and a few other accessories. Wolf Springs. After selling off the accessories I am into this gun for about $800.

Bottom. Springfield Scout bought with lots of accessories. Stripped down and sold part = about $900 for the gun, EBR stock (Used) $500, Smith front sight/gas block/flash hider/oversize bolt release ~$200, Wolf springs, Surefire 225 lumen Turbo light.

I don't own one, I was running a FAL then jumped over to the OBR (which is the tits) but the guys running M1A's really love them. I ran one really briefly while overseas and didn't care for it. The biggest drawbacks to the design in my opinion are the safety (hate it being inside the trigger guard) and the weight. Also, a good scope mount and getting your extractor tuned so it doesn't throw brass into the mount is a necessity if you are putting glass on it. Once you have it dialed in though, they are pretty sweet. I wouldn't say they are an instant sniper weapon by any means, (some people think the M1A is the right hand of GOD out to 1000 yards and that's just not the case) but with a bit of skill, good glass and decent ammo it will be good to go.

I've always wanted one too. And yes, they are stupid expensive. Speaking of which, here's some M21 gun porn, courtesy of Springfield Armory. :top:

Back on this subject, debating between the PSS or the M1A again.. selling guns plus saving up from computer work to buy one.. I just can't decide.. I'm leaning towards the PSS, having a solid bolt action rifle, great stock, free floating barrel is just a great platform.. After the cost of a PSS and a scope I'll be damn near $1,500.. The issue is I have called a couple local places, Federal Way Discount, and they can't even get one so I may have to buy one online, has anyone bought a rifle from a place like Gun Broker and had FFL info sent to them then transferred to an FFL then gone to the FFL and done the transfer? If only the M40A1 was cheaper.. drool...

ya'll follow the civilian marksmanship program? CMP Home Good way to get an M1.

Personally I like Mini14s. I'd love a real M1, but I can afford to shoot mini14 ammo. :eviltongue:

I was just watching "American Rifleman" on TV and they did a segment on the CMP and the M1s you can buy once completed... pretty tempting!

The M1A is basically a civvie M14.
I used them in the Corps and took the team shooter award with it. They are just inherently a great platform, and accurate. Well balanced and with a good barrel and trigger, one he.. of a match rifle.
BUT they are heavy with a full mag. If weight doesnt mean anything they cant be beat. After age 60 they seem to put on about 10# a yr :)
I like the AR for that reason and they will take the wiskers off a rat at 300. the M1A will do that at 500+ for an avg good shot but $$$$ for ammo.

Nice revival of an old thread. I'm probably going to end up getting the M1A Socom first, once they're readily available again. I'm debating whether to put Aimpoint with a 3x Magnifier on it or possibly going with an ACOG. I'll probably get the full size M1A a little farther down the road.
