I have been thinking of getting a auto rifle, and like the mini 14 as well as the AR's, but it looks like any quality AR will be about twice as much as the mini 14. My question is, is the AR worth the price difference, and would I still have good add on options with the mini 14 for things like optics?

mini 14's are great fun.. just ask the A-Team. You can find decent AR's and mini 14's in the $500-750 range a few Mini's might creep up towards a grand.. but in general entry level guns are gonna be equal in terms of quality and fun.

When you start getting serious about a combat ready or long range .223 then the AR's start getting spendy.

If it's just for fun, pick your form factor and get rolling.

I'd suggest building a AR from the ground up if it's hobby related vs. home protection etc.

Del-Ton's are a really inexpensive way to get into the AR world.

Mini 14 vs AR

They are different as night and day.
The AR is way ahead in accuracy.
I have had 2 Mini 14's and early pencil barrel and a
new and improved with the heavier barrel.
The Mini will diges anything thats thrown at it, but
accuracy....... Might as well have a shotgun with )) buck.
They throw brass into the next county.
The action is tried and true, and always functions, BUT...
I have one of the new SR556 E models, non chromed barrel, and added troys, and a geissle SSA E trigger. It is near a top match rifle now.
I really liked the Mini, but could not handle the inaccuracy, nor the horrendous muzzle blast. Without hearing protection on it finished off my hearing for good.,
So not a great varminter even unless you wear muffs all the time.
An AR is just leaps and bounds a better option. I saw AR's you can get built at Curts for about $700 or $750. A far better option in my opinion.

I had a mini 14 a few years ago, and it was a nice rifle. But the AR 15 is just a better rifle hands down, and way more accurate than the mini 14.

Depends on what your using it for if its a ranch rifle durability and dependability is paramount (As in tossed in the back of a truck, strapped to your back as you go muddin in your atv, strapped to your saddle as you ride the line ya know general all round recknekkin) id go with the Mini (Accuracy is decent you wont pick the spot but you will generally hit what your aiming at) Where as if its going to be babied (carted around in a case not really abused) and accuracy is paramount id go with the AR

Are you serious? The AR 15/M16 platform was designed as a war weapon that is built to have the holy hell beat out of it & keep on functioning.

Look at actual service weapons that are rode hard & put to bed wet on a daily basis & continue to function as intended.

I realize that most civilian AR's are babied safe queens due to the amount of money many of us invest, but your statement is way off base.

Would you toss your AR behind the seat of your truck and go offroadin?

Would you keep your AR in a barn

Would you could you In a trunk

Would you could you With some junk

ARs are precision tools

Minis are not

The Mini as our equivalent of an AK designed to take abuse and still operate

Maybe its cause when i was in we had to take exceptional care of our ARs or they would fail to function Maybe its changed but somehow i doubt
