As a part of security measure for storing the weapon, would taking out the firing pin be safe if someone tries to pick up my weapon and shoot me in my home?

how will you shoot intruders with a disabled gun?

if you are worried about such things either lock them up, store ammo in a separate room and/or hidden, or some combo of both.

I would say removing the firing pin is a bit overkill. If your worried about someone using your weapon against you, put it in a safe or at least use a cable lock on it.

what about differences in 223 and 5.56?
There is a lot of conflicting info out there....

Well, in my experience .223 works fine in a 5.56 chambered weapon. 5.56 is a little snug in a .223 chamber. It leads to cycling issues & cases getting stuck in the chamber. The best happy medium I have found to date is what Rock River calls a Wylde chamber. It's kind of a blended chamber that I have had no issues with firing or cycling either round. If you are looking for a dead on target gun, get a barrel chambered for either specific round & fire only that round through it.

my understanding is the main difference is in the thickness of brass of the cartridges is different - with 556 being the thicker brass. So if one were to load a 223 poweder charge in a 556 case, ther could be some issues with pressure. If anyone knows different or can add to, please feel free to do so.

I thought you could shoot .223 rounds out of a 5.56 chambered rifle, but not the other way around?

Also looking for a definitive answer on this as I'm looking to pick up an AR soon, probably a RRA.

I thought you could shoot .223 rounds out of a 5.55 chambered rifle, but not the other way around?

you can shoot .223 in a 5.56 just fine.

The reason you hear not to shoot a 5.56 in a .223 though, is due to the pressure differences. The 5.56 uses a smidgen more brass in the cartridge for thickness.

From what I've read though, this is not an issue anymore, in modern .223's.

Well I think most if not all of RRA's AR15's are Wylde chambered for use with both .225 & 5.56, so you should be fine shooting whatever you want from it.

Pete, not sure exactly what your looking for or if you have a dealer you prefer to buy from, but I figured I'd let you know that PK has a few Rock River variants available currently.
