Always going to depend on what you want. you can spend as little as 600-700, or as much as your imagination and pocketbook will allow.

I am hesitant of kits because I have heard of them using out of spec, inferior parts. I'm sure there has to be some company that sells a kit that is high quality, but I don't know which one it would be. I personally like to pick & chose my components so I know exactly what I am getting.

Site's?

These guys have been the best at keeping their prices down in the post-Obama age!

I just picked up a Rock River 16 inch bull barrel upper complete with bolt-carrier & charging handle for $595.00 from them last week!

They currently have Rock River lowers for $165.00!

Firearms, ar15 parts, ar15 accessories, m16, ar15 kns

Their supply has been limited, like everyone's right now, but when they get stuff in they are good at not charging an arm & a leg for it.
pkfirearms = reputable dealer. I picked up a 16" middie before Christmas from them after someone posted on arfcom that they were available. ordered on tuesday, had it friday. arfcom has lots of good info for how to build stuff, people selling parts, pieces, optics, etc.

I've been looking at complete "custom built" AR from Rock River. IIRC, with the options I had it was around $1200 or so ready to rock & roll, just add optics.

Hey did you get my IM the other day?
Go with S&W over RRA, or better yet, CMMG.

Ya think so? What about Armalite or Olympic or DPMS?

They are so much fun to build though! (Not to mention, cheaper).

DPMS makes good lowers. Olympic is best to stay away. Armalite stuff is spendy.

Actually just started working on another last night. S&W M&P15 Lower, which will be mated to a CMMG A3 Upper.

Really not sure what I'm going to do with that DPMS Hi-Rider in the picture. I bought it cause it was cheap (70 bucks). I think I might use it to make a dedicated 22 upper.

No no and no.

AR manufacturers break down into a few different tiers. Opinions vary, but based on facts like mil-spec or not, MPtesting of barrels, quality of barrel steel, etc, they come out like this:

Tier 1
LMT
Noveske
Colt
Sabre Defence

Tier 2
Armalite
Bushmaster
CMMG
Stag
S&W

Tier 3
DPMS
RRA
Oly

Here's the chart:
