I shoot my SKS with irons.. (my AK has a small scope mounted on a Parabellum system) Doesn't co-witness but the red dot is stable, and stays zero'd when I pull the dust cover.

Mine w/a small 3-9 on it:

Hey James, there are a few pre-made mounts and scopes available for the SKS. I used to have one for mine, but I prefer to shoot with Irons. Here's one it's a complete set with a Barska Scope

There used to be set that came with a BSA scope & all hardware that sold in the $30-40 range but I'm not sure if those are still around or not.

Get over to the SKS Survivors Board. Some extensive replies on such. For some reason the link below isn't sticking. You can find it in scopes and optics threads

Mounting a scope rail to the SKS receiver cover (Instructions: How To)

In general, the receiver cover mount don't hold zero well, unless you remove the cover latch pin, and tap a 1/4-20 through the receiver AND cover mount, while IN PLACE, clear through the other side. Install 1/4-20 grade 8, cut to size, blue. Many swear by this method.

The down side is of course you've permanently done something to your gun, but you can replace the stock pin.

I don't like the looks or eye relief of the scout type mounts.

sks scope

I had a scope on my Russian. I bought the cover that comes with the rail. I used brass feeler guage pieces and shimmed the cover and jb welded over them. Then mounted my scope with a bent piece of metal as a case defector that I drilled holes into and used the scope mount nuts to hold it. jb welded those so they wouldn't come loose. I used a cheap 4x20 scope at first then moved to a thinner crosshair scope so i could see full object at closer ranges. This set up worked realy good, it shot a 4 inch circle at 100 yards that is acceptable for a sks. Hey russia uses this type of setup for sniping.
I was watching a video from Syria where they brazed nuts and a rail on an AK to mount a scope To sniper with.

Sorry it took so long. I sprayed brakekleen on it then used some walmart lubricant in a can. I never had a problem.

James, check on " Center Fire Systems.com", they have a good selection of
SKS accessories at reasonable prices. They are a good out fit to deal with also.
