I was looking through my weblinks looking for some information and thought it would be good to get those links that we here in the northwest might need. Now, I am by no means an expert, but I have done a bit a of research and to save newcomers time, thought it would help if I dispersed th information I had.

Handgun laws this site is a great reference centers for the entire US. :top: their information is non-biased and you can expect that is just about as 'up to date' and you can get. Each state has a PDF file regarding that states' CHL laws and processes. I will tell you though, that laws regarding CHL changes all the time and the information you receive there in regards to carry, should be cross referenced with the state/county website. if you click on your state in the interactive map, you will also find CHL issuing authorities webpages, if available.

O F F Not my first choice, as much of their information is biased to the founders opinion but if you need CHL information for Oregon, its an option. OFF has advertised itself as a gun owner's rights freedom fighter but slants a bit away from main stream gun owners views, IMHO. Starrett wrote a book about gun laws in Oregon. I will throw myself on the sword and tell you I purchased a copy. I found good information sprinkled between his rhetoric and believe that you will also find some good information if you too can filter his opinions out of the information.

Defensive carry forum this is a forum where, obviously, defensive carry is discussed. Sometimes, you can get good info on ways to carry, legal updates and other odds and ends. Not that I like advertising other forums, but they have a large group of people and any time you get large groups of people together they exchange information- which is good.

Midway USA is a great resource for internet shopping for shooting supplies. its like the JC Witney of shooting supplies. They have a large amount of everything.

Clips 'n stuff If you live in the Willamette Valley and need magazines or other accessories, this is the place to go. I always support local business when I can.

So, those are a few places to get you started. Try them out if you need the information and tell me what you think.

Well, I'm not sure how these things work or if I'll be able to keep it up but lets see how it goes.
I thought I'd start out by going over some of the laws for getting your CHL. This is the starting process after you have decided you want a Concealed Handgun License in Oregon.

First take a look at yourself. You probably have already decided you want to carry, but now decide if you CAN carry. A few initial checks will help you decide if you are initially eligible to carry. This list isn't complete but its a good starting point...

•...(f) Demonstrates competence with a handgun by any one of the following:
•      (A) Completion of any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the State Department of Fish and Wildlife or a similar agency of another state if handgun safety was a component of the course;
•      (B) Completion of any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course if handgun safety was a component of the course;
•      (C) Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by law enforcement, community college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or a law enforcement agency if handgun safety was a component of the course;
•      (D) Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, reserve law enforcement officers or any other law enforcement officers if handgun safety was a component of the course;
•      (E) Presents evidence of equivalent experience with a handgun through participation in organized shooting competition or military service;
• (F) Is licensed or has been licensed to carry a firearm in this state, unless the license has been revoked; or
•      (G) Completion of any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a firearms instructor certified by a law enforcement agency or the National Rifle Association if handgun safety was a component of the course;
•(g) Has never been convicted of a felony or found guilty, except for insanity under ORS 161.295, of a felony;
•      (h) Has not been convicted of a misdemeanor or found guilty, except for insanity under ORS 161.295, of a misdemeanor within the four years prior to the application;
•      (i) Has not been committed to the Department of Human Services under ORS 426.130;
•      (j) Has not been found to be mentally ill and is not subject to an order under ORS 426.130 that the person be prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm as a result of that mental illness;
•      (k) Has been discharged from the jurisdiction of the juvenile court for more than four years if, while a minor, the person was found to be within the jurisdiction of the juvenile court for having committed an act that, if committed by an adult, would constitute a felony or a misdemeanor involving violence, as defined in ORS 166.470;
• (L) Has not been convicted of an offense involving controlled substances or participated in a court-supervised drug diversion program, except this disability does not operate to exclude a person if:
• (A) The person has been convicted only once of violating ORS 475.864 (3) and has not completed a court-supervised drug diversion program under ORS 135.907; or
•      (B) The person has completed a court-supervised drug diversion program under ORS 135.907 and has not been convicted of violating ORS 475.864 (3);
•      (m) Is not subject to a citation issued under ORS 163.735 or an order issued under ORS 30.866, 107.700 to 107.735 or 163.738;
• (n) Has not received a dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States; and
• (o) Is not required to register as a sex offender in any state.
• (2) A person who has been granted relief under ORS 166.274 or 166.293 or 18 U.S.C. 925(c) or has had the person’s record expunged under the laws of this state or equivalent laws of other jurisdictions is not subject to the disabilities in subsection (1)(g) to (L) of this section.

if you are able to clear this rather low obstacle, the next step is to get your training out of the way. If you have never purchased a handgun before and don't have a clue what to get, DON"T BUY A GUN until you have finished some sort of training. Lots of times, instructors or other students will bring guns to class that you can look at, compare and fondle to give you a better idea of what you want.

That's it for now.

The idea for this site came from countless requests to make a gun site for the Pacific Northwest community. Emails, private messages, and verbal thoughts just kept hounding me to build this site, so it's finally up and going.

The intent is to build a community for the gun owners, lovers, and discuss guns with a focus on the Pacific Northwest - Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

I'll use my Blog on PNW Guns to talk about this forum, changes, ideas, thoughts, and the direction of the site.

I hope you enjoy PNW Guns. :cool:
