So I decided the AR in 308 Project is going to be a bit too expensive, well over $1,500 bucks after scope. So I’m thinking about getting the Rem 700 SPS in .308, I thought 300 Winmag was too expensive, since it's mainly for plinking and possibly for hunting in the distant future so I figure .308 is plenty for plinking and taking down a deer if needed. I'm thinking about going for the 24" Barrel opposed to the 20" I was looking at the PSS originally but they're almost double the cost of the SPS and from what I've read and heard from the guys at the gun stores the performance isn’t much better for what I’m doing. When Z-Day comes along as long as I can take one down at 500 yards I’ll be a happy camper. Anyways to the point of this post does anyone have an SPS in .308 I haven’t had the opportunity to fire one, I've read a lot about them and heard a lot of second hand information and everything I hear is great but I just thought I would ask out of sheer curiosity.

I've been shooting various configurations of the remington 700 since I was a kid. I currently have a 660 mohawk chambered in .308. It's my deer/elk/whatever is big gun. It's old and ugly, but always does the job. I think I started shooting my first one around 11 yrs old chambered in .243, then I moved to .270. I shot one in 30.06 but for some reason I prefer the .308.

I love that round. If you pick up a 700 in either configuration you'll be fine @ 500 yrds. Optics come into play at that range. CHeap scopes usually do fine out to (in my experience) 300 yrds or so.. beyond that you start to notice warping and distortion.

the 20" barrel is plenty long to shoot out at 500+ yrds.
