Anyone own one of these before? Fun to shoot?

I hear they're cheap, readily available, and fun to plink with.

So, what's your input? (And anyone know of one in good shape for sale???)

my dad's got one, they're fun to shoot.. cheap.. and there were literally millions of them produced between the late 1800's and the mid 1900's they were eventually replaced by the ak47.

he's been collecting weird/obscure war rifles for years.. some of them are so crazy I can't even figure out how to get the bolts open. but the nagants are pretty cool.

selling my m44 and my mauser was the worst mistake I've ever made when it comes to firearms.

find a popular mil-surp rifle, and it will give you HOURS of enjoyment.

why you asking b ?
i would go with mauser, built a little better, the mosin is a great gun and also the only bolt rifle that i have seen explode in a guys face, i got rid of mine, not really cause of the safety factor but cause the mauser has the range i wanted, both are fun and cheap, i love shooting older rifles, plus they have tons of mods out there for them

i have one, its a hoot. Think i got it for $70 or $80 at big 5 when it was on sale. It took several hours to clean all the greese and kosmoline off it but it was well worth it. It actually cleaned up quite nicely and even included the nostalgic sling, cleaning kit, lub and ammo pouches.

As far as accuracy goes, I wouldn't bother taking it to the range, but its cheap and fun to shoot at crap with.

Make sure to get non-corrosive ammo (like wolf) its much cheaper then regular high power rifle ammo and the non-corrosive won't soil your gun to bad either!

M91/30

These are great firearms. Ever seen the movie "Enemy At The Gates" with Jude Law. Bad @$$ sniper from back in the days. I purchased a couple with matching numbers and clean overall stocks. Date stamp is 1938 and modified one to a tactical perspective ie, Sporterized Sythetic Stock, Scout Mounts and Scope, etc... :ciao:

The mosin 91/30 rifle has a secret for mounting a scope also, get a one piece dovetail dual ring mount with a high offset, tap the rear sight base off the dovetail mount and place the new double ring scope mount in its place. add the 3-9x40 scope, a carbon sporter stock and holy crap. a cheap vermin rifle that will shoot clean through 1/2 inch steel.

Does he have any on strippers? Found some online, but I'd rather save shipping costs... :listen:

in the meantime> NEW MOSIN NAGANT FIELD CLEANING KIT W/ 5 STRIPPER CLIPS - eBay (item 110489051258 end time Mar-03-10 11:30:56 PST)

Screamin deal! i might buy one when i get paid.
these tools area MUSt have for cleaning time.
Also, remember to douche your bolt head and chamber down with Windex prior to leaving the range, it will prevent the rust flash from the corrosive ammo & primers on the trip home.

I am in the process of scoping my 91/30, got the ugly cheap mount but i dont like long eye relief so i am trying to find a different mount i can use without drilling and bending my bolt to hell.

A good one will shoot MOA, even a "sewer pipe" bore will shoot well, have headspace checked on any mosin you buy(this goes for any used gun). The most recent imports seem to be pretty good. stay away from big 5.

Just out of curiosity, why do you say to stay away from big 5. I've been looking at their's...

Big 5 (aka united merchandising) buys in large quantities, and seems to seldom buy for quality, only price. By doing that they do not IMHO get the better quality guns (surplus). I have seen what they have gotten over many years and still remain unimpressed, I have seen a few gems among the turds, but they are few and far between.

their current 91/30 rifles seem to be from one of the earlier shipments that came out of the former soviet union.

I have been contemplating opening a surplus only, or military only, gun shop for a few years now, there are some fine surplus rifles out there and the residents of this state deserve a place to find them (someplace better than big 5). It does not seem that there is one anywhere in WA that I can find. If any one knows of one let me know.

Got my M44 at Big 5 about 5 years ago. Paid about $70, and I'd have to rate my (arsenal refinished) rifle at about 85-90%. There is minimal wear on the finish (aside from the muzzle) all the parts fit and work well, all the numbers match except for the steel plate on the buttstock. I used to think of it as a throwaway or "truck gun," but after seeing M44's going for $125-200 in worse condition (bearing in mind that many are probably all-original or special in some other way) I see mine as more valuable these days. It's very accurate, and ammo is cheap and plentiful.

Here is a post I put up on 3-22-10 on another board.

I just picked up the latest on Friday. I was in at our local Big 5 a while back and they had a repro 91/30 "sniper" on the shelf for $500. It was more then I wanted to spend plus I thought they were in the $300's until I asked in another thread.

Last night I found out about a 20% off any in stock item coupon that expired today. Well I took the coupon in today to make sure they were valid on guns, they were. They still had a (maybe the) 91/30 on the shelf.

So for $432 (sales tax) I walked out with a new gun,

It did come with the bayonet, cleaning kit, ammo pouch too I just didnt lay them out.

The stock on the new one is a bit darker then I like but the rest of the gun and glass is in great shape. The receiver is marked 1940. I am happy with the buy. I have been wanting one of these for a while, but most of my gun deals are impulse buys.

Here are 3 I bought a couple of years back for about $350 total. I know I could have gotten them cheeper but they were on the shelf and I could see the condition,

I have shot the 91/30 the most.

Well got home with the M91/30 "sniper" today, took it outside and shot 6rds to get it sighted in at 25 yards. Stepped out to 100 yards where I was shooting about 3" high. Stepped out to 300 yard with 5rds. Hit 3 pop cans and just barely missed with the other 2.

I was kind of surprised that it was actually semi easy to aim on a pop can at 300 yards with the 3.5x scope on this gun. The point sits very nicely right on the can making it easier to hit. I am shooting the Czech Silvertip light ball.
