Talking Recent Purchase

I picked this from a local guy (in CA) it's a semi-sporterized 1903a3:

Cost: $400 - Not bad, eh?

I will (hopefully in the near future - after my wife calms down from me spending $400 on a gun!) buy another stock and whatever parts to get it back to milspecs,
although who did the sporterized job didn't do a bad job. I've seen a whole a lot worse.

Now I've got to get ammo - any recommendations?
(I don't want a ton of the stuff, just enough to shoot it at least once - money is tight right now)

nice shooter.. I'm not sure I'd put it back to original.. If it shoots good, keep it as is.
it's probably worth as much as it ever will be worth as is. If you put it back to original there will be numbers which won't match.. so it will be a shooter grade weapon.

My dad has quite a few of them.. some sporterized, some not.. they all shoot like butter.

heres a link to a shooter grade in original form for around $500:
Model 1903A3 .30-06 Bolt Rifle : Bolt Action Rifles at GunBroker.com

and another which will likely end up in the same price range:
Remington 1903A3 30 06 : Bolt Action Rifles at GunBroker.com

Rifle Sales - M1903/M190A3

CMP often has good deals on 30-06. They also have parts and stock sets for 1903's. good info on the rifle too.
