CWP and weapon choice

Ok, hey all some know me some don't, anywho. Tell me about getting my CWP and what kind of weapon (hand gun) I should buy.

Long story short but here is the reason why: Saturday night we got home from s/m racing at 10:08pm, I was backing the trailor in when my son asked if he could get out, I said sure go unlock the door and turn on some lights.

When my son walked into our house there was a burgler at the top of the stairs, the guy ran down stood next to my son and told him to get out or he would shoot him. So my son comes out and is just standing in the driveway and is really upset, I ask what is going on and before he finished I was in the house but the guy was gone.

So there I have never been for or against having a gun, played with a lot growing up and in the Army but it has been a while.

Go to your sheriff department, tell them why you are there and start filling out paper work, get prints taken, and pay the $65. This is assuming you are in Washington, if in Oregon they are a class, very easy to get into and take and then I would assume the local sheriff department and other steps would be very similar though.

As for a carry weapon, no one can tell you. Go to shops and ranges, play with as many as you can. If you know people who have some handguns see if they'd let you play with them to see which you are most comfortable carrying. You will be surprised, if you look good enough you will find something that fits like it's not even there. I currently carry a XD compact .45 and Officers frame 1911(4" and 3.5" .45 auto's) and have never been called on carrying even in the last week when a jacket is impossible to get away with.

If you are in, or going to be, in Vancouver I have access and would love to help someone pick out their first carry piece. I am sorry to hear about your story and hope your son doesn't end up too bothered by it in the long run, however am happy to hear everyone is OK. Please PM me anytime if you have any question. I would be happy to let you know what has worked best for me, although that is nothing to base a purchase off of.

Picture Neo at the metal detector right before the assault to rescue Morpheus in "The Matrix" and go from there.

I'm really sorry that happened. It sucks to be a statistic. I have an interesting story about concealed carry I can tell you the next time I'm down your way. It'll only reinforce your desire to have a way to protect you and your family.

As for which gun? JasonM got it right. Go to a range that will let you shoot different guns and test a few out. Find out which one fits your hand the best, that is fairly comfortable to shoot, and go from there.

Once you get the actual handgun let us know and we can square you away on some personal defense ammo.

you want something that feels comfortable.. and remember to keep shooting it regularly after you get it... you don't want any cobwebs in the way..

As for a hand gun, get one of these! I just haven't figured out how to conceal it with the Beta mag in!:hmmmm2:

How about this instead? Still have the Beta mag issue, but you don't have that pesky buffer tube in the way.

My favorite is the airweight hammerless 38,
takes +P ammo and no hammer to snag. Its double action only, but at 5-10 feet, who cares
and there are lots of carry options, including pocket holsters.

and did I mention that it ways nothing !
(which is why I replaced the 357)

if you want to throw boulders instead of pebbles (as my 911 diehard buddy says)
the single stack glock .45 is nice, and I can live with the six rounds,
not as light, but works great in my uncle mikes paddle holster.

Wow, Sorry to hear that happened. I am glad to hear that your son was not physically harmed. As some of the other posts indicated you need to go to your local Police Department or Sheriffs Department pay the $65 get finger printed etc. Its defiantly a good idea to get you CPL. As for a pistol I personally would recommend a .40 S&W in a mid-sized framed gun Like a Glock 23, S&W M&P, Sig 229, or XDM. but that is just personal opinion.
I say this because you indicated you had not handled a weapon in sometime so I don't think it is the best idea to start with a subcompact or air weight revolver until you get some more shooting experience under your belt as sub compacts typically do not have the greatest sights and that can be important. Also the size of the weapon and the feeling as if you don't have a good grip on it can make you less confidant and impact your ability to effectively hit your target. I would also recombine getting a gunvault safe as you can retrieve your weapon quickly but it helps to keep unauthorized access from occurring.

I hope you find what you need and if you need any more help don't hesitate to ask.

Take care,

I carry a russian makrov 9mm, I like it and it shoots as good as my glock17, they are like $200.00 and ammo is not expensive, it falls between .380 and 9x19 very good inexpensive gun.

The first question you have to answer is "can you pull the trigger on a nother human being? Really think about this because, if you can't you are better to invest in some running shoes. If you can then qualify with the biggest firearm that you can safely handle. and then carry what you want. Because if you qualify with a 22 and shoot someone with a .45 the prossacuter will say that you had no busness with that big of a gun.and that you commited a crime by not being able to handle it. so take a conceal carry course that the instructor will stand up in court and testify for you. I know that wash. does not require you to take a course but you will learn the new laws and, get an expert whittness in court. food for thought.

^^^Truth^^^ If your not 100% committed to using a gun when you pull it, that same gun may be used on you.
