OK here it goes...I've built a fal, short gas system with 16" barrel. I'm having cycling trouble. I have drilled out the gas port to .125 and it has started to work but I wadded up a gas piston that I turned from stainless stock, not sure of the alloy, so I ordered a used metric one. Has any body done this. Did you shorten the return spring and how much. I am thinking of turning down the second guide on the gas piston to give the spring more room to avoid coil binding and then shorten the spring a little, say half as much as is cut off the gas piston............:hmmmm2:

Still having problems?

How short is the gas system? Is this the DSA system or a custom one you put together?

Throw up some pictures.

Sorry I haven"t been checking the thread. Is is the same as the DSA short gas system. I have it working now but the extraction is so hard it is tearing up the rim of the case. It is Remington brass and I hear that it is soft so I'm changing the load to Varget powder with the Hornady 129 GR sst bullets. I'm hoping that the faster powder will lower the force of the gas in the system. Slow burning powders are not so great on the gas system parts. As soon as my cf card reader shows up I'll post a photo.....

I'm still learning gunsmithing techniques, but have you checked the tolerances on the extractor ramp compared to the bore face? I've sometimes seen that a ramp that is out of range for a given rim diameter and/or thickness can lead to either an extraction that is too tight or too sloppy, and cause jams and other malfunctions. Sometimes the extractor spring can be the issue also. Am a newb at this...so just my 2 cent.
