For grunge, mineral spirits or Coleman fuel works as good as any high priced spread. Otherwise, any quality full synthetic motor oil is the same great cleaner/lube as in the highest priced spezial gun oil, at less than 10% the price per oz. Hype costs a lot of money. Ignore the hype and you are good to go with the best function in hand at a reasonable cost. Just get a squeeze/dropper bottle at the Dollar Store for convienient use.

There is nothing in synthetic motor oil that would diminish it's effectiveness for cleaning and lubing. There is nothing whatever spezial about $300 per gallon gun oil that will make it in any way better for cleaning and lubing guns or fishing reels. The little 4oz bottle it comes in is worth as much as the oil inside. It's called marketing folks, and it works very well for generating huge margins for the repackagers. The only thing spezial about it is the custom graphics on the bottle.

Actually, it's not. Motor oil has a lot more additives and other things in it. I'm not saying it won't work but don't say it's the same as they aren't. If you don't believe me look up the MSDS sheets for the different products.

In the world of motorcycling (forums, specifically) there's an oft repeated argument about oil. Some forums ban the subject entirely as it leads to nothing good. I'd find it very humorous if the same happened on a gun forum...

I use rem oil where it's needed and lubriplate grease on slide to frame contact surfaces. It's a white grease similar to what Sig recommends. A small tube will last the rest of your life.

I've used all kinds of stuff on my SS 1911.

Best? Simple green in the ultrasonic cleaner

Brake cleaner works well (take off the grips!)

Gun Blast works well.

Hoppes works well.

Really, I haven't found anything that doesn't do a pretty good job.

I'm going to mix up a batch of Ed's Red here in a bit and switch to that. Ed's Red' Bore Cleaner
