I need some quick education.

I just took a job driving a delivery truck.
My hours are midnight to 10am or so and my route will include stops in some less than savory areas.
This has gotten me thinking about getting a firearm for personal protection sooner than I had originally planned.
I do not have a concealed carry permit, but will be applying for one soon. I know that I can legally open carry on my person. What is the law about carrying in a vehicle? Can I carry cocked and locked in the truck? Can I keep it in a bag in the truck, still loaded and ready to use?
I want to operate within the law and within my rights, so I'm not interested in "fuck the law do what you want" type comments.
Thanks.

the short answer is No.
A person may carry a loaded firearm in a vehicle only if they have a valid CPL. Those without a valid CPL may carry a firearm in a vehicle only if the firearm is unloaded and not concealed in any way on the body. (RCW 9.41.050)

(2)(a) A person shall not carry or place a loaded pistol in any vehicle unless the person has a license to carry a concealed pistol and: (i) The pistol is on the licensee's person, (ii) the licensee is within the vehicle at all times that the pistol is there, or (iii) the licensee is away from the vehicle and the pistol is locked within the vehicle and concealed from view from outside the vehicle. (b) A violation of this subsection is a misdemeanor.
(3)(a) A person at least eighteen years of age who is in possession of an unloaded pistol shall not leave the unloaded pistol in a vehicle unless the unloaded pistol is locked within the vehicle and concealed from view from outside the vehicle. (b) A violation of this subsection is a misdemeanor.

Did you think to ask the company what their policy is? Not that it matters. And how the trucks are licensed? Are they a common carrier? You cant carry in one if it is. Regardless of company policy. And a big fat "NO" from the company just means that you are on your own if you have to use a weapon, they will not defend you, just fire you. If the company says "we dont care" or give you permission to do so, then they should be expected to defend you in court to the extent of you having a firearm in the first place.
I know plenty of wrecker drivers that carry and the companies say they will fire anyone who does, then wink.
