I do a lot of steel shooting cause they are easy to deal with. I have steel targets at 25/50 yards, 100 yards and 300 yards that are up all the time. While I can not get actual group size this way I can get an idea from seeing the marks on the steel. Also my 100 yard target has 6", 4" and 2" swingers on it. On my 25/50 yard range it is easy to put a box with a target on it to test.
I have built a couple of paper target stands over the years but they get destroyed or are big/bulky to deal with. I saw another range last year where the guy was using press board for backing and a simple 2x4 stand. I forgot what it looked like so I though I would try my luck and just start building.
I had a couple of sheets of crappy leftover press board from a friend and cut them into 2' strips (2'x4'). Then I went to town on the base that would hold the board upright and be easy to change. While it is not pretty it worked out. I am sure there was a better way to do this (I am open for suggestions).
Then I did a scary thing and got online to look up plans for target stands. I didnt really care if they were portable or fixed somehow. Most of what I came up with was bases to hold the 1"x1" strips for hooking IDPA type targets too. While they work well it is not what I wanted.
Then there was one guy with an idea too simple to be true. It was one of those "that isnt right that it is that simple" things. He said use metal fence T posts and then use wire to hold the board to it :stupido2: Well I do have more then a few T posts around here. The idea of the thread I read was to be portable and this easily fits the bill, they are easy to put in and take out. Simply drill holes in the board for the wire to pass though and pound the posts which takes less then 5 min for each target.
