I do a lot of steel shooting cause they are easy to deal with. I have steel targets at 25/50 yards, 100 yards and 300 yards that are up all the time. While I can not get actual group size this way I can get an idea from seeing the marks on the steel. Also my 100 yard target has 6", 4" and 2" swingers on it. On my 25/50 yard range it is easy to put a box with a target on it to test. I have built a couple of paper target stands over the years but they get destroyed or are big/bulky to deal with. I saw another range last year where the guy was using press board for backing and a simple 2x4 stand. I forgot what it looked like so I though I would try my luck and just start building. I had a couple of sheets of crappy leftover press board from a friend and cut them into 2' strips (2'x4'). Then I went to town on the base that would hold the board upright and be easy to change. While it is not pretty it worked out. I am sure there was a better way to do this (I am open for suggestions). ![]() Then I did a scary thing and got online to look up plans for target stands. I didnt really care if they were portable or fixed somehow. Most of what I came up with was bases to hold the 1"x1" strips for hooking IDPA type targets too. While they work well it is not what I wanted. Then there was one guy with an idea too simple to be true. It was one of those "that isnt right that it is that simple" things. He said use metal fence T posts and then use wire to hold the board to it ![]() ![]() Here is from the 100 yard line. I now have paper stands at 25/50, 100, 200 and 300 yards from my back yard. ![]() From the shooting line using the mound as a 25 yard, ![]() |

I have a neighbor that welds so he cut some squares and welded pipe to them for the hanger. The plates dont hold up too well to CF rounds, but it was cheep. Next time I have him build some I am going to have it hung from a few chain links so there is more give in the target. |

This is one of my favorite places and I can get just over a 1000 yards. In all the times I've been there, I have yet to meet anyone but it is kind of in the middle of nowhere. I did bump into a herd of about 50 elk once in that little island of trees center right. ![]() |

I primarily shoot indoors at West Coast Armory. I also shoot IDPA there. Shot IDPA once in Renton and it was awesome -- no pics though. Went camping here just before Fall and it was real nice. Some may call my targets ghetto, but they were more satisfying than paper usually is. ;) ![]() ![]() |

I make target stands out of pvc pipe and scrap plywood and I paint them bright orange for long distances. (makes them easier for my old eyes to see). I've also got one of those one-sheet-of-plywood fold up shooting tables. I found some scrap 1.25 inch plate at a quarry not far from here and used that for gongs. I made a metal frame out of rebar, some chain for it to swing on and presto, a noise maker resistant to high energy rifle fire :) | |
