I'ved lived in Wa. State for 57 years, and shot, competed, handloaded for my guns since I was 14 years old. We are going to move to Hawaii in maybe a year or so.I am going to need to sell most of my firearms before the move after I decide whaqt to keep and take with us. Hawaii isn't so friendly with firearms-especially handguns. I do not want to sell them out of my home.I also want a paper trail to follow them when they are sold. The guns were either all bought by me from dealers with applicable paperwork, or given to me by my Father (deceased). So I'm thinking of either selling them to a dealer to resell, or having them on consignment at a dealer.

First, does this sound reasonable? and second, anyone suggest a good dealer in the Tacoma area, or not too far from there that might be interested in either buying or consigning some firearms?

Thanks for your comments.

if you want a paper trail for a private party, get a bill of sale and keep it.

you won't get a good price at a dealer, but you will get your paper trail.

I think most dealers will want at least 20% for consignment or they will low ball you if they are to buy them outright.

Personally I have done good buying & selling from: Guns - Online Gun Auction - Guns for Sale at GunBroker.com

It is legal for you to ship rifles & pistols to a registered FFL, then the FFL will register the firearms to the purchaser. The purchaser needs to make sure his FFL is willing to receive from a private party, because some FFL's refuse to do so.

Do you have a Dealer you trust?
Consign them.
You don't have to mess with anything. The Dealer takes a cut for all the paperwork and FFL charges(if any).
You can always agree on a pre-determined sale price. Anything OVER that price, the dealer makes as his share. If an offer is made LOWER than the pre-determined sale price then, the Dealer MUST contact you for authority to sell at the lower price.
Dealer's don't/can't work for free. They Must make a profit to stay in buisness. Be fair to both yourself and the Dealer.

Get a copy of the ID of the person you are selling to if you are that worried about it. Another option is to meet the buyer at an FFL and have them do a 4473 there. Of course the dealer will charge a fee.

If you consign them or get a dealer to buy them as a lot you are going to lose 20% minimum probably closer to 40% or more. Of course they dont work for free nor do I expect them too but is is your call if that amount of loss is worth it to you. I know it would not be to me.

Another option is to sell them on an auction site like Gunbroker. When a gun is sold out of state it HAS to be shipped to an FFL holder who will do a 4473 on the new buyer. Of course the buyer is responsible for finding the receiving dealer and paying the transfer fee.

As everyone has pointed out there are a couple ways to go about it.
Private sales, or dealer assisted. Either way there are proper ways to get the paperwork done.To help with the choice, are more interested in getting "decent" money for your investments, or are you looking for the least hassle?

Private sales can be done with all the paperwork you want as the seller it's your right to conduct the sale with as much or as little paperwork as possible.

This can be done locally or nationally:
FTF (which means face to face).
FFL (transfered with shipping to a Federal Firearms Liscense)

You can require any or all of the following:
WDL (washington Drivers liscense)
CCW/CPL (Concealed Weapons Permit / Concealed Pistol Liscense)

Consignment (as james pointed out) can be great if you have a dealer you know, and can trust to handle all the details. It can also be a way to potentially lose 10-20% of the equity in your pieces.

Do you have a list of the various pieces you need to sell?
Do you know the base value for each gun?

Gunbroker.com is a great place to compare your thinking around the value of each piece. Unless you have some really rare guns, you should be able to find comperable models in the same shape and see how much others are willing to pay?

OR you can just sell them all to me for $20! ha ha.

good luck with the move to paradise!
