Washington State Patrol on Apparent Fishing Expedition
Please Contact Your Legislators Today!

The National Rifle Association has learned that the Washington State Patrol (WSP) has sent a letter, apparently to every firearms dealer in the state of Washington, as part of an investigation into “a missing/stolen AR-15.” The WSP has requested an incredible amount of information regarding dealer’s sales and acquisitions of AR-15’s and lower receivers over the last nine months. They want names, dates of births, addresses and more… from the past nine months! A statewide search through a mountain of information for ONE missing/stolen AR-15?

It seems preposterous to the NRA that the WSP would conceivably request this massive amount of sensitive data, in a search for ONE AR-15! It is the NRA’s view that there must be more to this story, a lot more. The NRA has placed two phone calls into the WSP today in search of clarifying information but has yet to receive any response on the matter. The NRA has also followed up with a letter of inquiry which notes that dealers are under no obligation to comply with the request.

We will keep our members apprised of any information that is forthcoming from the WSP. In the meantime, NRA suggests that you contact your State Legislators and let them know about this far-reaching and overly-broad request of firearm dealers by the state law enforcement agency. Ask your legislators to contact the WSP in an effort to find out what is going on in this case. You may contact your state Representative or state Senator by clicking here. If you don’t know who your elected officials are you may look them up here.>>>http://www.capwiz.com/nra/state/main/?state=WA&view=myofficials

Also, please contact Governor Chris Gregoire, let her know about the requests currently being asked of Washington’s firearms dealers by the WSP and urge her to find out what is going on in this case. You can contact the Governor by clicking here.>>>Contact Governor Gregoire

Just a heads up to everyone-

I spoke with the WSP detective this morning in regards to this investigation. FFL dealers are not required to respond with any customer information, or any information about guns they sold/received.

They claim the reason they are wanting a report of all the AR-15s is due to the fact that when an AR is stolen it is easy to replace the lower receiver and therefore replace the serial number on the gun.

From what I have heard from other dealers in town it looks like no one will be sending any information to the state.

WSP is really getting on my nerves well so is the state Government for that matter. Anyways I got this email as well and the tactics are very very dirty! I bought an AR in the last 9 months and would really not want my info put out there so they can check up on me....

Update on Washington State Patrol AR-15 Letter to Gun Dealers

Update on Washington State Patrol AR-15 Letter to Gun Dealers

As the NRA reported yesterday, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) sent a letter to every firearms dealer in the state of Washington as part of an investigation into “a missing/stolen AR-15.”

The National Rifle Association has had two discussions with the Washington State Patrol (WSP) regarding their letter to Washington firearm dealers in search of information on AR-15 transactions. Here is what we found out:

The letter was, in fact, sent to every dealer (over 1,000) in the state of Washington.
WSP reported that they have a specific suspect in a very sensitive case of a stolen AR-15 and they are trying to find that particular name in the records of one of the dealers so they can make a case against the individual.
WSP emphasized that the letter is not a mandate to respond but, rather, a request for voluntary assistance and information.
WSP acknowledges that they would handle the request for assistance differently if they could do it over again.
WSP insists that this is not an attempt to randomly collect the names of AR-15 owners and that they are not and will not use the information to create a list.

It was pointed out to the State Patrol by the NRA that what they were requesting was a virtual mountain of information that would be time-consuming and costly for dealers to accumulate and provide. Additionally, and more importantly, the information is of a high degree of sensitivity and law-abiding firearm owners do not look lightly at their personal information being collected by a state law enforcement agency.

The NRA has also been in contact with various members of the Washington Legislature, both Senators and Representatives, Democrats and Republicans. Many legislators, including at least 36 who signed a joint letter yesterday, have weighed in and expressed similar concerns to the WSP Chief. Legislators have also received feedback, in the form of an e-mail, from the WSP.

The NRA suggested to the State Patrol that they attempt to narrow the scope of the information that they are requesting and send out another letter, explaining the situation and clarifying that this is a voluntary request for assistance. Bottom line: Dealers, you are under no legal obligation to respond to the WSP letter.

The NRA will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as appropriate.
