So here is my question, is it legal to leave either a loaded or unloaded pistol in the unattended passenger compartment of a vehicle in Washington State? I am considering mounting one of these Biometric Gun Safes | GunVault to the body in my vehicle, but I am wondering if it is legal or not. |

Unloaded if you don't have a permit, loaded or unloaded if you do. Here is the main part of that law, RCW 9.41.050: Carrying firearms. Here is the pertinent part; (2)(a) A person shall not carry or place a loaded pistol in any vehicle unless the person has a license to carry a concealed pistol and: (i) The pistol is on the licensee's person, (ii) the licensee is within the vehicle at all times that the pistol is there, or (iii) the licensee is away from the vehicle and the pistol is locked within the vehicle and concealed from view from outside the vehicle. So if you are away from the vehicle it MUST be concealed from view from the outside. |

Thanks for the info guys, now I guess I have a second question? The way the law is currently written, if you are a CPL holder & have a loaded pistol in the vehicle it must be on your person correct? Is it legal to keep a loaded pistol in a locking box with you in the vehicle? With or without a CPL? For the record, yes I have a CPL. |

Well... if I need to have it "on my person" even if I'm in a vehicle... then I've been doing it wrong for over 30 years..

Used to be OK to place it in the vehicle with you, but it is my understanding that as of 2010 a CWP holder must have their pistol on their person. But I could be completely wrong too! That's why I ask questions. | |

Now if they would just go back and allow loaded long guns, so I can mount a shotgun to the dash or center console

It does not need to be on you. It is stated in the law I linked, (2)(a) A person shall not carry or place a loaded pistol in any vehicle unless the person has a license to carry a concealed pistol and: (i) The pistol is on the licensee's person, (ii) the licensee is within the vehicle at all times that the pistol is there, or (iii) the licensee is away from the vehicle and the pistol is locked within the vehicle and concealed from view from outside the vehicle. If you read it your options are (i) OR (ii) OR (iii). The comas are OR It would be impossible to follow the law if the comas = and....... So basically to have a loaded handgun in the car you either have to have it on you OR you have to be in the vehicle OR it has to be concealed from view if you are out of the vehicle. . it dosn't need to be on you, but if the vehicle is unattended, the vehicle needs to be secure and the firearm needs to be out of sight |

Of course none of these rules apply if you are the Chief of Police in Seattle.

I believe it would be ok for you to leave on the trunk of your car as the Seattle PD set that precedent.

SPD is becoming a joke! Had one do something rather aggressive to my brother and I in front of our house. We live out near Fall City!
