Derringer question

So I was thinking of picking up a little derringer just for fun. It won't be a carry weapon or anything like that. Just to take out to the range let some rounds off and enjoy it. But from what I've read on some boards, is that it isn't fun. It hurts lol. So I'm curious does anyone here have any derringer's if so is it as bad as they say? I guess I should clarify. I'm talking about the big bore ones. .357 and up. I was thinking of grabbing a .44 mag kind.

If it's really that bad I may just pick up a revolver for the same purpose. I don't own one and think I should. I've shot the S&W 500 once at the range. A guy let me try his and I thought it was awesome. Anyway any feed back as always is appreciated.

Just a note, some ranges don't allow shooting of small pistols like the derringer types.

Because of their inherent inaccuracies beyond a few feet the ranges either don't want rounds leaving their property (outdoor) or damaging their facility (indoor).

As for the big bore derringer being fun to shoot. Maybe one or two rounds but you won't think it so after that. There really isn't enough grip area to spread the force out in your hand like the grip on a larger pistol. They really aren't designed to be something one would shoot regularly, they are a weapon of last resort. Something you use when your down to your last option or a better option is not available. A weapon meant to be used inside a range of 10 feet or so.

If you're looking for something to shoot regularly and like "magnums" consider a good .357 or .44 magnum revolver from S&W, Colt, Ruger, etc. If you keep the barrel length to 4" it makes an OK carry piece too. For just shooting, I preferred the 6" barrel variety in these calibers. Nice and accurate with better recoil management than the shorter barrel. Less Flame too.

Ok cool. You pretty much said what everyone else has said about the little derringer type guns. And since I've never shot one I'll just take other peoples word for it. Thanks for the feed back.
