Learning gun safety as a child

When I was a kid, most guns were too large for any kid to ever handle or get used to, but we all started out with BB guns to use for target practice and the explanations of safety came along with that.

When you were a kid, how were you taught gun safety? Are there things you would emphasize when teaching the really young ones about guns?

Same way as you. Dad gave me a BB gun and taught me the rules. After a while, he let me go shoot outside by myself, but I know he was checking on me through the window from time to time.

As I got older, it switched to a pellet gun.

And lastly, it was the pistol range. .22 handgun, then 9mm, and so on. Each gun brought additional instruction on handling, care, and safety (some guns had "clickable" saftey mechanisms, some didn't.)

To this day I've yet to have a mishap and it's because of the teaching and instruction I received.

I'd almost bet money that the first gun I ever shot was a 12 gauge. I got a good lecture about gun safety when I was first handed a gun, and then again in hunter's safety.

As to the lecture I would give...pretty much what I got. 1) here's how to load and unload, safety and unsafety, and shoot the gun. 2) it should only be ready to shoot when you are 3) make sure you have a good backstop 4) hold it reeeeeeeeeeeeeally tight so your shoulder absorbs the impact.
