Quick Mossberg Question

It's my understanding that the Maverick 88 and Mossberg 500 are similar in all but a few details. A lot of accessories/barrels etc designed for the 500 claim to be compatible with the Mav 88 (with the exception of foregrips, it seems)

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody here has any experience with using Moss 500 parts / accessories on a Mav 88. I'm told that some parts will need a bit of fine tuning / filing etc to make them fit snug on a Mav 88.

In particular, I'd like to know if a Moss 500 barrel will be safe and operable on a Mav 88. Thanks in advance fellas.

BTW - Picked up a brand new Mav 88, with pistol grip and 100 shells all for $200. It was a veterans day deal at a pawn shop. This was my first shotgun, and my first time firing a shotgun. Took it to the range today and I LOVE IT. Just thought I'd share.

Check out "Mossbergowners.com" Very knowledgeable folks over there. With guns, I would always advise not using parts that require "fitting" unless you really know what you're doing. The 88 is a bargain. Heck, their most expensive pump, the 590a1 is a bargain. I wouldn't hesitate to use any mossberg shotgun!

Thanks! They do have a lot of good information in there. As it happens, M500 barrels do in fact fit on Mav88's, as do MOSTLY everything else tailored for the M500.

Arrow Mossberg vs. Maverick

I think that the main difference is the one-piece forend/slide assembly on the Maverick is different than the action-tube assemblies and separate forends typical on most Mossbergs. It's not a problem, unless you want to change the forend on your Maverick. Then you would likely have to try to install a action-tube assembly and then find a compatible forend. Other differences include the location of the safety, and non-compatible trigger groups.

For the few dollars more, I bought a new Mossberg Persuader 500, made with American parts, rather than the Maverick, primarily assembled in America, with Mexican parts. Heck, that almost sounds like a Clint Eastwood spaghetti-western intro.....lol But it sounds like you got a deal on a used Maverick..... it is all good.

YMMV,

Lots of the "field" guns from mossberg are now coming with the pinned one-piece forends. 590s, and 500 tacticals I believe are still using the old style assemblies, but there are two different length ones, so you have to be careful when ordering parts.
