Building a Suppressor

Question for you guys, if you were going to build a suppressor for your own personal use do you still need to have a FFL license, or do you need to just get a $200 Stamp? I ask because I was pretty sure even if for personal use you needed one of the 9 types of FFL licenses because it stills falls under manufacturing firearms/accesories, my buddy is intent on building one and doesn't think you need one if it's for your own use and you're not selling them, so was just curious?

I'm pretty sure it's a felony to make one. If I were him I would reconsider building one without the proper licensing to do so unless he is a fan of prison.

If I remember correctly If you are building for yourself you just have to get approved by the ATF and the applicable fee to build it for yourself PLUS the tax stamp... I personally know someone who built one for himself without proper licensing and spent 5 years in Jail for it

Ok I've gotten mixed replies on this, I just remember doing research for my C&R and reading that if you are making a DD (Destructive Device) you need an FFL License no two ways about it.

It's a Form 1, building an NFA item. Need to have the tax stamp in hand prior to any machine work being performed.

Here is a thread / vid by RanB (the man who spearheaded suppressor use last leg. session) that explains a how-to.

always better to just read some threads, and never post

than post, easy to trace.

Ever since I studied, implemented and expanded on the solutions found below (by wrapping my computer, phone, wifi equipment and etc. thereby preventing 'them' from even reading this,) I've actually been able to sleep most of the night.

"ignorance" is not a suitable defense in any court of law. It's better to ask openly and know to just not do it if it is in fact illegal.
