Reminder to be safe

Yeah yeah, I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I thought I'd share these stories.

4-year term for teen who fatally shot friend | The Columbian

Kid blew his friends head off right in front of the victim's girlfriend. He thought it would be funny to scare him, so he put a shell in his father's sawed-off double barrel, and pulled the trigger. According to the newspaper article, he thought the shotgun wasn't operable.

Something similar happened in my own home not too long ago. My two brothers-in-law came over for a visit and one of them fired a 9mm round in my house on accident. I keep one of their weapons in a locker in my home becuase they live with small children and have no way to secure it. Anyway one of them picked it up, didn't do a chamber check, and pulled the trigger. The round didn't hit anybody, and nobody was hurt, but it doesn't make it okay.

Fellas, you can never be too safe. No matter how professional you are, how well-versed, skilled, etc. Doesn't matter how long you've been around firearms, accidents can still happen. Chamber check every time.

Okay I'm done with my rant. Stay safe friends.

Sounds like you should have kept that pistol in the locker. That Brother-In-Law needs to develop some more responsibility before handling a firearm again. If there's any good news in this, at least it didn't happen around his kids like the bozo who shot his kid on the Tulalip Reservation a couple of years ago.

What a sad ending. I wonder why the boy thought the gun was inoperable.
