Bug out bags

Alright... lets hear what you guys are putting the the essentials bag?

Things I'm thinking about:

Get Home Bag (always with you)
Tools to get out of natural disaster
Protection from rioting / chemical attack
Food / Water / Medical
GOOD Bag (get out of dodge)
Food Water Medical for more than 3-5 days
Family included - what do you bring, what can each person carry
Maps and where are you going (obviously examples are cool here)
Currency? What's going to be worth a shit? Barter?
Off Site Cache (exit stragegy in a storage unit)
Larger assets which are not carry-able
Longer term food/water plans (water purification / garden / etc)
Long term defense - ammo, reloading, snares, traps
Ultimate destination to wait things out or?

My list: gun + ammo, then use that to acquire the rest.

I carry a bag in my trunk at work but often take it on longer trips. I really should have one in my truck as well but...

Food- I got a good deal on mountain house when GiJoe shutdown
Water
Lightweight sleeping bag
Bivy
Compass
Maps - mostly local green trails / topographic maps of common areas where we work
Rhino / radio gps
Two small lights, one headlamp
Warm clothes
Lightweight rainfly
Candle
Knife
ifak + snivel kit (aspirin, bandaids, etc.)
A few mags of spare ammo

Keep in mind, this is a work kit for extended stays in the sticks but it works well for the personal car too. I also carry several demo tools like the Stanley FUBAR in my trunk, I'd probably want one of those as well. I plan on buying a crovel too someday, those are pretty cool.

My girl & I have a pretty good start, but a LOOOONG way to go.

Vehicle Carry:
Each has a small backpack containing
- 3 days food (MRE), water, emergency blankets, ponchos, First Aid, extra blankets in the back of my truck and padding the dog lays on but in a pinch, and if it's cold, WGAF, up here it gets cold fast.
- Extra clip o'ammo.

Bug In:

- Water to last about a week or more for the 4 of us
- Dehydrated food/MREs
- Leatherman
- Rope
- Tarp
- First Aid
- Lights
- Firestarter
- H2O purification tablets
- Ammo
- Etc.

Right now, this serves as both Bug In/Bug out. Backpacks are financially unattainable. Would like to get more ammo clips and, of course, more ammo.

Mean time, I have to get better, if we have to run like hell, I'm fucked. Walking might be ok, but not for long. Ugh.

I'm liking these lists..

anyone have a solar powered charger that is worth a shit?
I have seen a few guys with rechargeable batteries for Radios, flashlights, GPS (if it still works ) etc.

Also how about longer term water purification?

solar solution is harbor freight tools 45 watt solar battery charger, i have mine paired with two batteries and a 3500 watt invertor, works endlessly if managed well

Long term filter 4' pvc pipe filled with pure charcoal and a pour hole/screen on one side and and outlet on the other with a ball valve( there is more "layers" inside just to long to spell out)

Josh, I have a solar/hand crank charger and a radio (with shortwave) in our kit. I can't attest to how great it works compared to other equipment, but you can also charge items (cell phone, MP3 player, walkie talkies).

I try to keep some basic supplies in both vehicles, but have come to one conclusion: Babies complicate things! Especially trying to stay prepared. You have to repack your emergency kits every couple months for clothes sizes, and if you don't want to throw out a bunch of unused diapers, you need to swap them out every time the kid is changing diaper size. Plus, before they get onto solid food, you need to make sure you have formula (which costs a couple boxes of ammo worth for a good size container) if the mom isn't going to be there.

Complicated and expensive. But then she smiles at me and laughs and it's all worth it.
