Friend of mine says off duty LE now banned from carrying at Clink and some other Seattle venues. I can't find the report, have you got any info?

From the Clink website:
The following items are not permitted at CenturyLink Field:

Weapons
Guns, Knives, Pepper Spray, Brass Knuckles, Loose Batteries, Wires, Box Cutters

This is not new news. This has been in the RCW's for a long time. It's been an issue at other places but apparently only just now at the Clink? Not local so not 100% on this one.... The catch is this:

If the stadium is operated by the city or other government entity they cannot prohibit LICENSED concealed carry owners.

How they get away with it is this: they "rent" or lease it to the Mariners or other private party, so the private party can make the rules about guns, etc. This has been discussed for years now. There also may be a "No Weapons" clause as part of the lease agreement to said private party. Big loophole there concerning the RCW's governing concealed license holders.

If there is no way to detect the concealed weapon, IE metal detector, how will they know? The worst they can do is cite you for trespassing if asked to leave and you refuse to comply. However, this is definitely a carry at your own risk.

Off-Duty police fall into this category also....although I would imagine a flash of the badge would be all it took to have this rule waived. Still reading the RCW's but I can't imagine them prohibiting police officers from carrying there, off duty or not. I'm sure that rule is only for the public.

Many dept.'s require carry off duty. And you are correct, it is the lease or contract holder setting the policy, not RCW. I should have a copy of the letter in the next day or so, will post it if allowed.

I believe in the RCW's there is an exception for police officers, off duty or not, from the local firearm restrictions allowed by the state for private parties. Still trying to find the exact wording though.

Why the hell would you NOT want off duty cops to carry? Just to make goddamn sure the only people who might have guns are criminals? Makes sense...

I know -- this is dumber than that Denny's the barred on-duty cops from carrying while in their restaurant...

Oh no, the Denny's thing is far, far dumber. No way in hell is a uniformed, on duty cop EVER going to not carry his/her sidearm, and asking them to do so is the height of idiocy.

I would love to ask the moron that came up with that policy if they think that stupid 'NO GUNS' sign is some kind of magic talisman that wards off criminals who otherwise would bring a gun in, to the point COPS having guns is not needed.

I have a buddy who is a cop in Federal Way. He said there are several "venues" in the Seattle area who bar anyone but on-duty cops from carrying. Showing your badge is not enough, they don't even want off-duty guys carrying. The rational behind this is nonexistant, but it is their right as owner/operator. I'm not sure if the Clink is one of these places, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Got a list? I won't patronize them when I visit.

I have seen a copy of the letter, but I can't figure out how to copy it. Came off Google drive. Anyhow, looks legit, effective 1-1-13, off duty cannot carry into Clink, Clink event center, and the WaMu Theater. Says they are very safe with all the uniformed officers in the area. Signed by Adam Link, General Manager, CenturyLink Field.

Sad.

Now that you bring it up, you're right. That one was pretty idiotic -- and of course the guys didn't patron the place. I mean seriously? Leave their tools in the car while on duty?

Here's my take - if they don't allow everyday citizens to legally carry, that's their right but I don't have to patronize them. I don't like separating off duty cops from everyday citizens, it's just another "us vs. them" privilege that creates a greater divide.

That being said, I still carry at schools and a few other places that are off limits to the armed public, not because I'm cool but because I know no one else will be able to deal with a bad guy should the need arise because some dickhead made it gun free.
