Rat problem can I shoot em

I live in beaverton, very close to portland city limits. We have a rat problem, I have a whole arsenal of various traps and poisons, but the things are smart. They won't touch the poisons, and maybe 1/10 traps gets a rat, however every night all are triggered and my bait is gone. I've tried getting them with an adult pellet rifle but they're very resislant, they just squeek and run off unless you get em right in the head. I'm pretty much to the point where I'd like to sit in the attic with my 10/22 and put an end to these bastards during active hours, which seem to be 8-10pm. So i have a couple questions, first would a ruger 10/22 penetrate standard house siding(I'm assuming 7/16 OSB and 3/8"-1/2" wood siding)? I don't want to risk putting a round into the neighbors house or anything. Secondly what are the legal implications aside from noise complaints(discharging within city limits, etc)? Any advice is appreciated

Yes, it might penetrate, and it is probably against the law to discharge a firearm within city limits.

Try a blowgun or wrist rocket. They might be more successful.

when I was in hunter's safety, I saw a .22 penetrate ~6 2"x4"s, then pop a paint can.

yes. a .22 is a firearm. treat it as such.

get a cat.

Look up .22 shorts, or .22CB Shorts. Thank me later... :)
Whoa there, he's talking shooting indoors. PS Also, have you forgotten the Military member who had his firearms seized and faced felony charges, shooting in the city limits? :hmmmm2: ...AJ

Rats!

My problem was a much larger variety, skunks! I purchased 2 boxes of Aquila CB caps in LR. They are as quiet as an airgun, but the 20 grain leadhead will do a job on small animals. You'll need a tubular feed 22 rifle. Your 10/22 will not work, the CB caps do not have any powder, only primer. There are two varieties of the Aquila; one has a muzzle velocity of about 450 fps and the other has a velocity of about 700 fps. Got to have the faster CB cap, the projectile might get stuck in the barrel of your 22 if you shoot the lower speed cap through a rifle barrel and of course these rounds do not have the gas pressure necessary to operate a semi-auto rifle. So you're stuck with a pump, lever action or bolt action. I use both a pump and/or a lever action. At 30 yards or less they are deadly on varmits. I love my Henry lever action and it's zeroed for 25 yards. I also live in the city limits, I'm very careful about where and what I shoot at; if any question, I don't shoot. I've also given a box of shells to two of my neighbors. They like them.

+1 on the Gamo Whisper. 1000 to 1200 fps. Solved my rat problem here in the city limits.
:banghead:

That Thar's what I was trying to tell'em. PS wait till he shoots out the plumbing or into the electrical, or the paper boy delivering the evening paper...AJ

He said he lives outside city limits, no? And we're talking about something that is fired by the power of the primer. No powder. It's probably not a whole lot more powerful than a pellet gun, but a whole lot more accurate.

You my friend have apparently never handled a modern pellet gun. They are not the "Daisy" BB gun of Yore. PS I put down a lot of "Barn Sparrows" with my $12.00 Daisy...AJ :eviltongue:

My advise is that you do not discharge a firearm of any kind at any power level within city limits or within any municipal government controlled area where discharge of a firearm is against the law.

SO the first thing you need to do is find out if it is legal for you to shoot at your location.

You're in your attic?

How about .22 shot?

Other than that, I can attest to the power of todays quality pellet rifles.. I've removed several pests with one..

+1 That's what I was going to suggest as well, you can get the .22 pellet guns it seems like that would be more than enough to take down a rat, assuming we're not talking about New York subway sized rats haha..

If thats all ya have, aquire some bb caps or cb caps (extremely low powered 22 shorts) but people gripe if a cap gun is fired anymore in areas like that.

I worked construction for many years and have used powder activated nail guns that used blank .22's and never had anybody call the police. These are as loud as .22lr going off. If I would be trying to eliminate pests I would have my Remington powder actuated nail driver and all associated items around and make it look like I was doing some remodeling.
