I am a new gun owner and am looking to get a mosin for a decent price. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Are there any other lower priced guns that aren't to pricey to shoot minus a .22? Thanks for the help

why are you opposed to a .22?

if you can find a GOOD source, anything in a military caliber is going to be cheaper than the rest.

the cheap/popular calibers are also going to be the hardest to find in a drought.

As for locating a Mosin-Nagant do you want a 91/30 or an M44? You might be able to find one at your local Big 5, that's where I got my 91/30 & M44, they'll run you between $140-200 these days. As for ammo there are quite a few places online where you can purchase Spam cans of 440 rounds of 7.62x54 for around $80-100.

I have seen good quality Mosin 91/30s at most Big 5 up and down the I5 corridor - I picked up 2 hex receiver pre-war in excellent shape in the last 2 months.
you can get 440 rnd spam cans of Russian 7.62x54R at Surplus Ammo in Tacoma

I'm building a match grade Mosin at this time - only the receiver will be left when I finish

I am looking into getting a Mosin at some point in the near to late future. Is there a strategy to finding them now. The Big 5 in Tacoma and Lakewood seem to never have them in stock any more and the low price days of 2012 are apparently gone.

I got both my 91/30s and my M-38 at Big 5, but they do seem to go fast even at the $120-140 prices. Talk to the manager and find out when the shipments come in. Gun stores and pawn shops are a good place to look also, and I've picked up other rifles at decent prices from estate sales and auctions. I've picked up a couple in the past at the big gun shows, but prices now are pretty much the same, sometimes slightly higher, than regular retail. Some of the small club gun shows used to be a good source, but I don't know how the new laws will affect the small shows, they'll likely be smaller tho. I've been thinking of building a custom one, if so I'll be looking for a barreled or stripped action either at a show or "Gunbrokers" online and build up from there. In fact, prices at the online auctions are fairly comparable to retail prices, sometimes better but sometimes way out of line, you're sorta buying blind, and need to have it delivered to an FFL for delivery to you (usually about $25 for a transfer fee) after the background check (another $9 or 10), but they seem to be always in stock. Check out the surplus rifles and the C&R forums, study up so you know what your looking at and for. Some of those forum guys might make you a good deal as well, but again, make sure you know what questions to ask.
