Do auctions like these happen often where law enforcement agencies auction off guns which they no longer need as evidence?

I don't know about "often". I don't have a lot of experience, but I have a friend who is with Federal Way PD. In the last 5 years, he has told me about only one sale they did, and it was not an auction. The guns were offered for sale to the individual officers first, and they were all gone before it got past that point.

I think maybe with some bigger departments in more liberal cities, it might be more common.

Most often, guns (if auctioned) are placed in lots. Usually a bunch of **** guns with one or two nice pieces. They are then put out to bid to FFL holders but all proceeds have to go to the general fund of the city or county, not directly to the agency.

Some agencies get around this by trading confiscated guns to a supplier for equipment, ammo or new guns. This is becoming more rare.

Some agencies have a "destroy all guns because they are evil" policy.

If an agency is offering guns to individual officers they are former duty weapons being phased out or replaced. I've never heard of anything from the evidence locker being cherry picked like that and a lot of times employees are restricted from participating in property auctions so there is no conflict of interest.

Yes, phased out/retired duty weapons are what I was refering to, not confiscated property/evidence.

I bought a Remmy 870 that was released from evidence from Tacoma and sold to SA&A. A like new shotty for under $200 out the door it still had the evidence tag on it.
