WTB: Looking for home defense shotgun

Hey everyone. I'm just looking to buy a used shotgun for home defense. I'm in a house right now but will probably be moving into an apartment soon and so I'm looking for something with less potential penetration in an apartment building and have landed on a shotgun. I'm leaning towards the classics: the Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 but I'll settle for a good deal on a shotgun with a good documented pedigree. I'm trying to stay at around 200 bucks and something with a shorter barrel. Thanks for reading!

You going to use birdshot or something like that? Buckshot still penetrates a lot, let alone slugs. Just sayin.

Either of those you mentioned would be good choices, new is going to be close to double what you were looking to spend though. But you could absolutely find good used examples for $200.

There is R870 Express Tactical with an 18" bbl, but it's $420 MSRP, probably $350-ish at good stores?

Yeah I was thinking birdshot. I was looking at them in sportsmans warehouse today. I could probably pick one up between 300 and 350, but I'm fine with a used one so I figured I would put out a feeler. If it comes down to it I'll just buy a new one.

You can get a 2 barrel combo Mossberg 500 for around $300 at Big 5. Gives you a nice trap/bird hunting barrel and a shorter HD barrel with no choke, so you can shoot rifled slugs out of it.

I wish this thread wasn't so old, I was going to mention that Wally World carries the Mossberg Mavericks for $200 brand new in 12 or 20 ga. It's a good way to go.
Oh, and stick with buckshot or a slug and aim at the main body of any intruder. Birdshot... well, it is actually intended for the birds. It has poor penetration of people AND walls. Check out the Box o Truth, too! The Box O' Truth #14 - Rifles, Shotguns, and Walls The Box o Truth

I do highly recommend sticking with buckshot, at least #4, preferably bigger, but it gets expensive.

Do keep in mind that a Maverick is not the same as a 500 or one of the guns that costs more, and you would be well served to pick up a metal follower and check out some "tactical mods" like a flashlight. ;)

Glad to help!
