Where do you carry your fixed blade?

I'm assuming most on this forum carry a folder in your pocket. Who doesn't?

But for those who carry a fixed blade...how/where do you carry it? And more importantly, why?

I tend to carry a 4 inch blade, IWB, at about 8:30 (just behind my left hip).

Why? My right is my primary gun hand, and I've been through enough to know we sometimes need to access a weapon with our left hand. It's comfortable, and is easy enough to access with my right if necessary.

I carry a small (~3")double edged knife (CRKT Sting) in my backpack with my leatherman.

Nothing wrong with a general purpose knife in a pack.

But who else carries a fixed blade on their person?

My theory: for general purpose tasks, a folder works just fine. The key being that it is not an emergency when you need to use it. You have plenty of time to 'fix' it.

If I need a knife for protection though it's a different story. In a reactive situation there is little or no time to access and 'fix' a folder (outstanding individuals aside, most of us can't make a folder ready for use while we're taking damage).

In proactive situations, I'll most certainly have time to access something from a bag...but I'm not so nearly concerned about those situations.

Thus, a fixed knife, on my body, accessible from either hand while under stress.

I carry a 3" crkt (folder)

I'm just not likely to carry a fixed blade daily.

I have several fixed blades which are near my person (BOB, Truck Bag, Get home bag etc)

I have a 5" ka-bar that normally does carry duty
I don't see a easy way to have a knife that size on my person.

Oh, I don't know.

7 inch blade. Obviously this has to be positioned correctly.

One has to be motivated to carry this way; I generally don't. But it can be done.

When I did I carried it on my belt right side just to the front of my right rear pocket.

Used to carry a divers knife strapped to my left outside forearm under long sleeved shirt, in a plastic sheath with a lever release, but when I quit wearing long sleeved shirts for work, the knife and holder went back into the safe. Have tried several sheaths and holders around different positions on the waist but never got comfortable with it.

Would like to have option of fixed blade carry, agree that gross motor skills may not be able to get to folder and get it open.

I have a Benchmade Nimravus that came with a pretty serviceable Kydex sheath; I added a Tek-Lok belt clip to replace the somewhat hokey fixed belt loop, and wear it on a Galco gun belt at about 8:00, just at the left rear pocket forward seam.

Can't agree more, the couple of seconds we imagine we'll have to deploy a folder is actually spent in realizing "holy sh!t, this guy is actually coming at me."

I also like having a left-hand draw on the knife in case for whatever reason my right hand is busy doing something else, such as deflecting an opponent's gun, or a dozen other unforeseeable activities.

Usually a Mk-4 can of OC/CS is sitting back in that spot, but sometimes the gut feeling is to add the fixed blade.

I was under the impression that concealing a fixed blade in WA was illegal.

(b) Furtively carries with intent to conceal any dagger, dirk, pistol, or other dangerous weapon ... is guilty of a gross misdemeanor punishable under chapter 9A.20 RCW

On your belt is not concealed unless it's then hidden under a shirt. Coats are OK. Key points in that RCW are "furtive" and "intent to conceal."

Ever try to take a picture of your own LR? It's easier said than done! :laugh:

I was carrying the OC/CS today so stuck the Benchmade on there for the pic. It's a little crowded as such...
