Hello all! I moved to Oregon about five months ago for a new job. My wife and kids are still in Ohio and will be finally moving here in another week. I am a reloading and shooting fanatic. Unfortunately, my rifles and reloading equipment are still in Ohio, but will be here in a couple of weeks. Back home, I went to a public shooting range operated by the Ohio Division of Natural Resources and a family friends land in West Virginia. I haven’t figured out where I am going to shoot here in the Hillsboro(Portland), Oregon area. People keep telling me that I can just go to public lands and start shooting, so long as I follow the rules. Any guidance would be appreciated. I’m an NRA member. My favorite gun is my Thompson Center Encore. It has a trigger job done on it by Mike Bellm that is very nice to say the least. The Encore started off as a 50 caliber muzzleloader but now has barrels in 270 Winchester and 223 Remington. I’m rather surprised that the 223 barrel is not shot out. It has seen some use but continues to shoot great. Quality reloaded ammo, a very clean barrel, and a good trigger = small group size. I’ve never shot competitively but want to give it a try in the future. I’m a good shot but don’t think I’m in the same league as the serious benchrest shooters. Not even close. A little more than a year ago I started casting my own 22 caliber lead bullets. I’ve got the casting part down pat and can make some beautiful looking little projectiles. Getting them to shoot consistently accurate has been an exercise in frustration though. I look forward to reading and occasionally posting to this website. |

100 yards at the DNR range. Mountain top to mountain top in West Virginia. Probably 300 yards. A West Virginia mountain would probably be considered a small hill in these parts.

Hey if you get into shooting competitively, there are so many classes you can shoot in.. My dad goes to the odd competition here and there.. he wins once in a while but always has fun. He told me recently (down in vancouver wa) he was shooting in a "cast lead bullet" shoot where you can only shoot bullets cast by hand. He won, and may have got some kind of record? Point is, you would probably do better than you think in a local competition! Welcome aboard. |
