I stumbled across this forum a few days ago, and I have to say - I am impressed! I thought I'd stop by and say a little something about myself. I'm currently in Iraq, in support of Operation New Dawn. I deployed out here last year with the 3/116, based out of eastern Oregon. I'm going home late august, and it can not come sooner! I live in La Center, WA (just north of Vancouver in case you were wondering) with my fiance of 4 years. I just recently bought my first personal firearm, a Taurus 100 .40. The first of an ample collection, I'm sure. I've never hunted, never fished, and I've never even fired a weapon outside of the Army. Unfortunately it's just not the kind of family I grew up with. Heck my parents or other adults in my life never even had the time to show me how to drive - I had to teach myself! But hey, you can't pick your family. I hope to be able to teach my children (someday) how to hunt, fish, shoot, drive, etc. I've got a Bachelor of Applied Science in the workings, and plan on going to medical school afterwards, with a direct commission in the Army. End goal is forensic pathology - autopsies and whatnot. I'm about as far left as you can get when it comes to political beliefs (expecting to hear a lot of boos for this one) - with the exception of gun control. Being in the army (99% conservative) is really doing a lot in slowly transforming my belief system. Growing up, my dad was never really concerned with firearms, or gun control, so my disposition was always neutral. I also had a very biased opinion of NRA members, gun enthusiasts, and the like. That all changed the day I came across an essay titled "A Nation of Cowards" written by Jeff Snyder. (A Nation of Cowards) In case you're interested. Just thought I'd stop by and say HI. Greetings, from Tikrit, Iraq! |

Welcome to the site! Thanks for your service & get home ASAP! I read your other post & no matter how you look at it, your Taurus will be a good gun for you to learn with. You may or may not decide to keep it long term, but you are bound to learn a lot from having it! |

I know where Amboy is, I'm not too far from there! I've been meaning to ask - what are the laws as far as where you can and can not shoot? Do you know of any great secluded and safe places I can go to shoot? I'd like to go right away when I get home!

Awesome and welcome. I too have always leaned more to the left until the past 5 years or so. Now I have no idea where I sit politically just get the job done I guess. Thank you for serving this fine country! Cheers! |

You can go up on the Weyerhaeuser land and there are lots of places to shoot. Look up canyon creek.. lots of gravel pits for shorter distances. My dad and I have a few spots where we shoot 300-700yrds. just don't go up there shooting during hunting season! Lots of guys wandering around.
