I just dug up a scope with a 3-9x magnification. It is 12in long so it looks a bit goofy on my Ar-15 M4. I was wondering what is the difference between long scopes and shorter tactical scopes with the same magnification. I know the ACOG has a 3x zoom and a very low profile, but can't zoom in greater than 3x. I feel almost like if I'm not going building to building having a longer adjustable scope is more of an advantage. Any input?

I dunno.. just depends on what you want to do with the guy... I have a 3-12 crappy barska scope on mine.. I don't really care if it looks goofy. It shoots good! does real well out at 200-300yrds. Beyond that the quality of the scope glass comes into play and it gets a little blurry. Oh well, it's a $80 ebay special... and it gets the job done. If I lived in easter wa, AND HAD SOME DECENT ACCESSIBLE places to shoot I'd consider putting a little better scope on there.. but fuck it.. I'll spend my toy money on another gun! |

I have no clue why you just posted a whole lot of long scopes' links... That didn't answer my question. Thanks for the effort, lol. So far from what I've been getting from others is this: Long scopes generally have more magnification, weight more, and don't usually have red dots. A lot of Tactical scopes are light weight, low profile with red dot/green dot for night usage. Ya? |

I just ordered a Varmint A4 with 18" bull, should be here tomorrow. ![]() Anyhoo, I got to fondle a couple ARs yesterday, one 20" bull, one 16" bull. The 20" definitely felt a tad heavy, and nose heavy at that (duh). The 16" was more balanced. I'm guessing the 24" is rest/bipod only kinda thing? Last edited by GixxerPete; 05-21-2009 at 03:24 PM. |

What do you all think of this setup? I ended up not liking it much cause of the 3 1/2 inch diatance from center of scope to bore... Too much compensation. I think I'm done throwing money at it |

Umm... long range scope on a CQB setup carbine? ![]() And yeah that does seem like a lot of distance from center bore to center scope. I say yank the scope off, keep this AR for CQB and build another one for long range w/the scope. |
