For those of you who are looking to get your Oregon CHL and live in an adjacent state, but were wondering which county to apply in... I recently got my OR CHL from Linn county. The office was very friendly and helpful, and they have a digital fingerprint scanner in the office. They do require you to write a letter explaining why you "need" to carry, but it appears the sheriff thinks that self-defense is a good enough reason. I got it in the mail 2 weeks later. Great experience overall. |

Do you have to do it in person or can you mail in prints/paperwork?

A Concealed Handgun License. And yes, you do have to apply in person, but you don't need an appointment or anything like with some counties. Just show up during office hours and they will process you. |

Okay. Any chance this is an easy process in Portland - if for whatever reason - I'm down there?

Portland is more difficult. I believe there are two days a week you can turn in some of the paperwork, then they set up an apointment time for you to come back. It's a pain in the butt, that's why I went down to Albany.

I had heard that each county in Oregon is different, and that one counties CHL may not be valid in another? Do you know if this is accurate info? I have work in Portland and was wondering the legality of bringing my handgun with me from Wa to Or.

If you carry an Oregon CHL, it's good throughout the state. The only exception would be for places where nobody can carry, such as a courthouse. Some counties might make it a little easier to obtain, but once you have it, all counties must honor it.

Washington County makes the CHL process easy. Download the papers call for appointment show up day of appointment sheriff is pro-gun and works to make sure our CHL's are not public information.

Last year the Sheriff from Grant county came to one of the gun shows at the Puyallup fair grounds, they did the hole process wright their, you olny had to have a copy of the completion of a safty corse, and a copleted application that you could down load from their web site, it was veru easy and i got my card back in about three weeks, so keep a eye for that.

Agreed with Arch. It's pretty lax here in Deschutes county. The grey haired sheriff lady is pretty nice to lol.
