Is it ok to hunt coyote with a Big Game rifle 30/06 when big game season is closed...someone was trying to tell me that just the possession of a big game rifle when the season was closed I could be sited because it shows intent to break the law....

Anybody

I'd contact your local Fish and Game people and ask. Go 'in person'.
That way if your 'in the field' and, are stopped, you can expalin that you stopped at the office and talked to 'Officer (fill in the blank) on this day at this time and the information given was this(fill in the blank).
Then the questioning officer can contact the officer you talked to and know your not coming up with a 'story'.
Even if your cited, you can tell the judge the same story and, bring in the officer to corroborate your story.

being in possession of a rifle is showing intent to break the law? what law?

murder? poaching? target shooting?

*Do you seriously not know how to look up the laws yourself? The only way to be sure is to find the laws yourself.

In Oregon (I been hunting here and reading the regs for 44 years) it is legal to hunt coyote with any rifle, shotgun, bow, pistol, revolver, muzzle loader what ever. There is no caliber restriction and you are not restricted to only 5 rounds in a semi auto rifle. Rabbits, Beldings Ground Squirrels, Nutria, And Coyotes are classified as predatory animal (think VARMIT). the laws about not spotlighting within 500 ft of a vehicle apply but not much else.

Oregons Hunting regs are posted on line on the ODFW web site and a easy read.

Sorry I'm use to forum that have more traffic then this one. Normally on the forums I frequent if its on the first page its not more then a few hours old. I will keep in mind the rate at which things change around here.

To bad it took the OP 2 years to get a complete answer to his question.

sunofnun I'll be around I like a place with a warm hearth and good gun talk. Not so much into Black guns but I know a bit about Old Winchesters Reloading and Bolt Action hunting rifles and US military Pre Vietnam weapons.

I'm glad you posted. I did not know that nutria and rabbits fit into that category.
