Alright, I decided that I wanted the XDm over the XD, so I had my next pistol choice narrowed down to two. The Sig P229 and the XDm in .40. Then I went to the gun shop and was comparing them again, and the worker pulled out the M&P for me to compare as well. And big surprise, I like that one too. I decided that the SIG was a little out of my price range, and I like the lighter weights of the polymers as this will be a carry gun. Primarily for the range, but it will definitly be carried as well. So I did a few searches and found some comparissons of the M&P and Glocks, but I couldn't find anything comparing the XDm to the M&P. They seem pretty similar to me. Capacity - XDm ![]() Polyner frames and Interchangeable grips - both comparable size - M&P might be slightly thinner, couldn't tell for sure(barrel length not a concern) price - M&P was a little less (not sure about accessories and add ons though, how do those compare?) Forgot to compare the triggers So what are your thoughts between the two? Last edited by BigStick; 03-11-2010 at 02:01 PM. |

ive owned a glock17, xdm9, xd40sc, and an xdm40. i love the glock but sold it after a few years to my brother because i felt like i was getting tired of 9. just after that I traded my xdm9 plus cash for the xdm40. I love it. Has a great feel and comes with all the goodies. heres a few pics of mine: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I plan on adding some Truglo TFO sights to it and maybe a little trigger work down the road. other than that, i couldnt be happier with this weapon. |

I'm starting to think I might like to add an XDm 3.8 in 9mm to keep the XD .45 Service company.

WTF? That's stupid. It's a match pistol. Shorter barrel isn't good for match shooting.

Just because it can be used as a match pistol doesn't mean that is it's only use. I was thinking about using it as a daily carry. I'm build in a way that I can conceal a full sized pistol, and I love the capacity.

Well it's what makes it a m. It's cheaper to get a normal sub compact and buy a match barrel. But that's just me

Oh okay well thank you for clearifying. I was under the impression that it used the same frame is the SC xd just with the interchangeable back piece. Guess I really havnt looking into them since I bought mine. Are they still only 9mm and 40mm? If I can get one in .45 and with a manual safety I just might get another one.

Yes, still only in 9mm and .40 S&W and no manual safety. There have been no announcements regarding .45 ACP or GAP being brought to the XDm that I'm aware of and if I had to speculate, you probably won't see a manual safety on an XDm.

I have heard conflicting reports that some match shooting want you to have manual safties and some don't. I havnt kept up on shooting comps since I got my motorcycle. Guess I need to get out to the range more lol. Come next tax season I wanna try and get a v-10 model.

I don't know. I'm sure you'd want to have a 1 3/4" belt with it. After seeing this one and thinking I would like it, I decided to go about an afternoon around the house with the XD tucked in the back my waistband. I walked around, sat in my recliner, did some cleaning, etc, and it seemed like a good spot. I think you'd want it to shift somewhat so it could move around with you instead of being fixed in one spot like a hip holster. I was fairly comfortable with the pistol in the back, even sitting in the recliner.

i have a crossbreed super tuck, and for me it sits behind the hip bone. only time it's uncomfy is certain chairs. i might need to set the holster to sit lower in my waist band.

Galco is the only one I've seen so far that has a "middle of the back" holster with a palm out draw, which seems very natural to me from any position behind the hip. Middle of the Back is also a good position to conceal the full size grip, IMO. I also like the OWB holsters with an exagerrated (sp?) forward cant to the draw angle like Galco's Fletch or Silhouette, as this also feels more natural to me than a straight up draw from high on the hip.

The XDM 3.8 .40 is a smooth shooting gun. I am also going to purchase a 3.8 9mm soon...just because.

I've had springfield XD service (4") sub compact (3.5") and XDM 3.8" all in 9mm and loved them all. CDNNinvestments.com is the cheapest place to get them, just have it shipped to ur FFL.

Ace Hardware & Columbia Gun Rack have the best prices on Springfield's down here & you don't have to pay additional shipping or transfer fees. XD .40 is goin for about $460 & if I remember right my XDm 3.8 .40 was about $530 a month or so ago.

My 9mm subcompact regular XD out the door was $460ish (including FFL, tax etc). $460 for local isn't bad. Our gun stores here typically want top retail for anything I want so most of the time I don't bother with them.

Back to the OP.... I have several XDs and an XDm, so I'm obviously a fan. But that said, the M&Ps are solid pistols, and are being adopted by some LE agencies, so you know they're good. S&W doesn't put out junk. Err... Sigma what? Anyhoo, both are solid choices and you couldn't go wrong with either. My best advice is to SHOOT THEM BOTH!!! Find a range that has both for rent and try them out. One may fit your hand better than the other, or just "feel" better or shoot better for you. That's the one I would pick. I seriously considered an M&P myself before going with the XD, the XDs fit my hand well, point well, and just plain shoot well for me, but the M&P was a damn close second. YMMV so try em out yourself! |

yeah my buddy bought a Sigma recently. wtf is the deal with that 12lb trigger pull? I heard it was per request of the LE agencies that wanted it to have such a heavy trigger pull. I'm not a fan for sure lol.

Ok to be fair to the poor Sigma, it's not "junk" per se. It's still a S&W and as such I'm sure it works fine and goes bang every time and all that, but it was a failed attempt at a Glock competitor (which they got right with the M&Ps) and somehow manages to sell enough to stick around. Which makes me wonder about the new SD line, which looks like a souped-up Sigma. Who wouldn't spend $110 more for an M&P with higher capacity, adjustable grip size, an all around nicer gun? I sure would. |

hey all i know im a little late on this post but better late than never i guess. i am a huge fan of both the xdm 4.5 45acp myself. i will be getting one this coming week (thank you tax return). but i completely agree with the shoot first decide later. i was running in to the same predicament (M&P or XDm) i ran over every website, magazine, and youtube video i could find. finally i went to the rang and "bang" my choice was made. but i do have the best of both worlds because my job will be going to the M&P come summer so i get to shoot them both all the time.

I vote for the Springfield! I have an XDm .45 and love it. I used to own various auto pistols that have been associated with the S&W name, and wasn't too thrilled with the performance. However, I realize that maybe the M&P line of pistols has had a bit more R&D cash spent on them since they are geared toward LE. I just think Springfield makes a fine product and they have never disappointed me.

If you want something ready to rock, with a match grade barrel that shoots so straight and sweet, you can't go wrong with the XDM. Rangemaster let me rapidfire 16 round clips multiple times. I can not make it jam! It's listed as tactical but the 40 S&W 3.8 conceals very nicely. If you've never had a no-safety, work with it....a lot. You don't want to be like the training video guy that shot himself! |

Good thread. I was in the same predicament but for the compact versions of the xd/m&p. I shot a friend's xd40 and rented an xd9 and couldn't hit shit... couldn't get comfortable enough with it. I love the looks of the xd line but in the end function over form. Finally went with the gun that fit me better... the m&p9c. Got the one with tritium nite sites and 3 mags... should be in by Friday |

I had this issue but with a Glock 23 I was looking at owning one of those again. A buddy of mine in vegas had me sold on the xd series so I knew and was comfortable with the glock 23 but I like the added safety features of the xd along with all the goodies you get when you buy one so I ended up with a XD40sc shot it last weekend with my brother inlaw he wants one now I live it more than I did my glock the feel was great the only thing is the 9 round clip is way too small for my hands to fit around I bought an extra mag as I cannot find the extenders anywhere in the state seems everyone has them for the 45 only. XD's are great guns but it all depends on the feel of the person purchasing the new Member.
