I'm looking for a .22 bullseye gun. Seems like something I'd enjoy doing; so, I need a gun. I've got some options and I'm trying to weigh them to figure out which way I'd like to go. Here's what I've got on my mind (gun - base price + cost for mods): 1. Beretta 87T - $850 + $350 2. S&W Mod. 41 (Stock) - $950 + $350 3. Used Walther GSP - $1250 + $250 4. S&W Mod. 41 (Clark Custom) - $1500 + $350 5. Other - $1500 to $2500 The S&W Mod. 41 is a classic and well known quantity. It would need grips, trigger job and a red dot. If I get it from Clark, it comes tuned w/ a Clark barrel but still needs grips and sight. The Walther is a known shooter and would only need a red dot. But, it is used and I don't know the history of the gun. The Beretta is an unknown. It has been recommended to me as a terrific shooter, but I have no first hand knowledge. In the other classifcation would be Benelli, Morini, Pardini, Feinwerkbau, Walther, High Standard, etc. What is not on the list is a Ruger. From my standpoint, the Ruger Mark I/II/III aren't in the same league as any of these (no matter how much Volquartsen or Clark is on them). The trigger never gets to where it needs to be and they are way too barrel heavy for my taste. I can borrow a stock Mod. 41 for awhile to test drive and that makes me want to go pick up the Beretta and Walther. Keep what I like and sell the other, or sell both and buy a Mod. 41. So, what would you do? And why? I'm really undecided as to what to do at this point and I'd like to hear some ideas. |

Going to shoot ISSF style Standard Pistol and NRA style bullseye. Both are .22 at 25 yards. Bullseye will be 50 ft indoors on a reduced target to simulate 25 yds. I've ordered a new Model 41 and when it arrives it will likely go to Clark Custom for a new barrel and some internal work. Price wise, this option is about the same as a Pardini, Hammerli or Walther. In actual fact, a Pardini is probably a better choice, but for me, I'd never be able to maximize the difference and my decision came down to the M41 being an american made pistol. It's ordered, but the gun shop needs to find one to get to me. A nice advantage to this option is that I wind up with two barrels, the Clark barrel is a rail only barrel with no sight that I can mount an Ultradot on and I keep the original barrel with the sight. The Ultradot is cool for bullseye and the open sighted barrel is good for Standard Pistol. I can also send the original barrel off to Tenring for an insert to make two really nice barrels for the gun. Add some Randall Fung grips and I've got a top notch shooter. |
