XDM & 1911 Range Trip

Decided to take my 1911 and XDM to the range today and get a bit of shooting in. It was the first outing with my XDM, and only the second trip with my 1911. Set up the targets at different ranges from 7-10 yards to see how I could do with acquiring multiple targets...2 rounds on each target, then engage the next target. It was funner than just doing precision shooting. All I can really say is, I'm certainly a damn sight better with my rifles than I am with handguns, but hey, practice makes perfect...and a reason to go out shooting more.

I can guarantee you that you need to work on your trigger finger follow through. Everyone does! Congratulations are in order for sure. The fact that you don't have a bunch of low lefts is great. The most common mistakes I see in folks shooting new to them guns results in low left hits, especially with double actions. I'd call that a very successful trip. Now get some snap caps and do a couple thousand dry fires concentrating on technique.

I have done any pistol shooting in over 11 years...since my Marine Corps days...and knew I'd need to practice the basic mechanics for pistol shooting. Luckily I'm not discouraged about it because it just means more range trips.

No need to be discouraged. As I said, your training did well by you. You're throwing lead in the same pattern, at the same spot on the target, with a Double action polymer gun and a single action 1911. That's really impressive.

whoa whoa whoa, the XDM is not double action its striker fired

"Like all XDs, the .45 ACP Compact features a unique trigger, which, strictly speaking, wouldn't be classified as double action only. Springfield refers to the action as the Ultra Safety Assurance system. The internal striker is loaded when the slide cycles. The result is a trigger with a relatively short arc; the break is remarkably consistent and measures (usually) around eight pounds or so. It certainly isn't as crisp as a single action, but it is consistent, which solves the usual problem with conventional double-action/ single-action autos--namely having to navigate a heavy, spongy pull and a light, spongy one."-Sizing Down, Powering Up

I agree with what you're saying, but the whole world seems to have fallen back on the term DA only as the way to describe guns of this type. I guess I understand why. You pull the trigger and the gun fires. No hammer to cock. Go to just about any retailer. Action = Double. It matters to gun nerds. But the short hand for "striker fired" is pretty much "double action". You say striker fired to most people and they'll go "Hunh?" You say, "You know you just pull the trigger and it fires" and they'll go "Oh... Double action!" It's kind of like the word gay. As South Park pointed out, Gay people just need to let it go. It doesn't mean what it used to any more. :laugh:
