I know that a lot of it will depend on what I want and what I like, but I am curious to get others' opinions about the difference in the XD and XDm. Does the match grade barrel really make that much difference? What about the trigger difference? And I know it has a few more rounds. But I was hoping someone who had owned/used both had some ideas about wether or not it is worth the extra money to get the "M"?

I think it depends a lot on what your intended use is. Carry gun, skip the M barrel. If its meant for a little longer range or competition then get the M barrel.

The overall dimensions of the standard XDm are bigger than the XD. If you're intent is open carry, XDm FTW. Even the XDm 3.8 has the same size grip and capacity as it's larger sibling. If you want something more concealable, the XD .45 in compact has a short grip but still holds 10 in the short mag and you can get the 13 rd mag with a grip extension for it also. Then there's the XD subcompact.....lots of choices for sure but no matter which one, they're all a nice shooters. Personally, I can't get over how "soft" the recoil is on my .45 XD. Compared to a friends' Sigma .40, it shoots like a 9mm. |

I have both.. an XDm and XD Service in 9mm. Yes, the match grade barrel is better, the longer barrel and different sights give nearly an inch longer sight radius making it a little easier to shoot accurately. The trigger is a little better, but not hugely so. The grip is definitely more grippy, and the interchangeable backstraps are nice and allow a more "custom" fit. So why would you want an XD then? Size is one reason. The XDm is a full size gun, not so good for concealed carry. The XD is approx the same size as a Glock 19, and thus more packable. Price would be another, XDs are about $100 or so cheaper than an XDm. And if you're like me and want to put a Crimson Trace laser grip on your XDm, you can't as they don't fit... but they do on the XDs. For me, the XDm is range/target gun, and I plan on doing some IPDA/IPSC type shooting this year, and it will be my gun of choice for that. The XD will get the CT laser grips soon, and will be a nightstand or carry gun, though I have smaller ones for that purpose. |

I would have got one but I couldn't find it with a thumb safety. So I got the xd45 with the thumb safety for 560 out the door but that's here in Oregon. Gun shafters tried telling me they didn't make a thumb safety. Good thing I did my research before I went and purchassed it

So is the XDm really that much harder to conceal? It felt to me like they were pretty close in size. They are both full sized pistols.

Well the xd you can get in a 3,4,or5 inch barrel. The m only comes in a 5. And as for harder to conceal it depends on how you choose to conceal and your body type. I have seem people conceal full size .45 and even .44 mags. Hell if your Houdini enough you could conceal a mossberg 500!

who carries a full size pistol concealed?? I mean thats cool but jeez forget about comfort in driving and walking around. I carry my LCP in my front pocket and forget its even there.. the perfect little carry gun.. i spose if i was going someplace i was scared of i might pack the G30 but even that is too big to carry imo

That said, it all depends. Some people carry full-size 1911s, the 5" Tactical XDs etc so sure it can be done. Most people feel a larger butt is harder to conceal than a larger barrel, and the XDm's have a rather long butt. So it can depend on your physical size, the type of clothing you're wearing, etc. But a small/lighter gun will always be easier to conceal. So yeah, I would def want to carry my XD over my XDm. YMMV | |

I can drop my service model in pocket of my dirt bike coat. my full sized 1911 won't fit in the same pocket.
