Learning to Reload?

Ok so I live in the Beaverton Oregon area and I was looking for someone that knows how to reload that is willing to take some time and help me buy the right press, show me what i need to do to reload.

I am hoping this person could show me what powder to use, primers etc.

I know theres a liability and people are scared to show people but there has to be a nice guy out there that can help someone learn the safe way.

About me

I am a responsible gun owner but at $22 a box of 25 is nuts. I only go target practicing a few times a year. My focus is 9mm and 22. I dont need to load the 22 its mainly the 9mm I want to focus on.

I might buy a 357 as well in time so what ever i get I want to make sure i can swap parts to make it work. My Dad has a 223 and a 357.

In time I would love to go to him as well and build the ammo that might never get used as a way to build time with my dad.


Any suggestions?

Yes. I went to 5 of them and called two gun clubs. All said sorry for liability reasons we cant recommend anyone but you can try forums and see if you can find some one.

They will sell me a Kit and well YouTube will show me how to press but theres more to that when you see adjustments on the top with screws and how to tell how much powder to use or what kind of powder. Really looking for a class or something. This is not a PCC class i can go to.

The thing is, I definitely know someone who I would wholeheartedly recommend, but they're not anywhere near you. If you were up in this neck of the woods on travel or something, I'd put you in touch -- because that's all the guy does. He loves working with new reloaders and basically trains, then supervises you on reloading your stuff, while using his supplies and equipment for...

How much would the guy charge do you think for a class. As a business owner I can make time for this. I really only want to learn so that I can take my wife and daughter out target practice when the weather gets better. As it's now there limiting on how many rounds I can buy.

I can drive anyplace. I just want safety first.

Then after some more practice Ill go to my dads house and help him reload more as in an event of fathers day.

honestly, it's not that hard.

the biggest thing is finding the recipe your gun likes.

find a medium load in a popular-for-the-caliber powder and bullet grain, and work up or down from there.

Lee or RCBS is the equipment to get, and I learned everything from youtube.

I do single stage, and my press can be setup for almost any reloadable caliber from small pistol rounds to large rifle with the change of a die.

He doesn't charge anything because it's not a business -- just a fellow that likes to teach others. That being said I've heard of friends giving him $50-$100 for the day of instruction on top of the costs for materials.

It is rather simple (as Koorbloh says above) but I found it invaluable to be walked through the process. From understanding how to use the book to correlate the product you're using, to the specs for each type of load, to how to inspect and do your own quality checks with calipers, etc. it was well worth the time.

This particular fellow has a room set up with everything needed and will set up times for you to just come over and use his stuff -- again, just compensating him for materials -- whenever you can arrange it. No charge, just an enthusiast...
