Savage 93r17 , just buy a CZ, hell buy a Rossi.

So normally I wouldn't do this but I know I would have liked to read this before I decided the way I did. About 2 months ago now I bought a new Savage 93r17 from Cabelas, sprung for the heavy barrel, laminate thumb-hole stock model for about $400. Thought this would be a great gun, decided to not spend the extra $150-200 on the CZ but man am I regretting that decision. Bad workmanship. floor plate is paper thin and bends easily under the action bolt load, and lastly it wont sight...

Over the course of owning this gun I've got to shoot maybe 4-5 frustrating clips. Before getting any decent scope on it I was just testing it a little up in the woods since my mounts hadnt come in yet and found it misfired approximately 2-4 rounds every magazine of both Federal and Winchester ammo. So I paid the shipping and sent the gun into Savage for warranty. The gun returned to me with some repairs and a bag of Hornady cases they had test fired. I retried the Winchester and Federal rounds and still the misfires persisted. I thought well that's disappointing but I suppose I'll just buy Hornady from now on.

Next my Weaver mounts showed up and my Weaver tactical rings and I mounted those all up and attempted to boresight the gun at approximately 20 yards initially. With no right adjustment or down adjustment left in the scope the gun was approximately 3 inches left and a foot or better high...at 20 yards!! In other words at 100 yards it'll be off by a mile!

I wish I could just return the damn thing and go pick up a CZ but looks like I'll be dropping another $25ish on shipping for pointless warranty service. My dads CZ and my cheapo Rossi will shoot any ammo all day long and sight correctly. Not sure what happened to Savage but I would stay away from them, this gun is a, now about $450, piece of ****. :banghead:

I've read on other forums of people being shipped completely new rifles so I think this time around I'm going to ask that they don't do another warranty repair as that improved nothing last time. Hopefully they will be willing to ship me a new rifle instead as I have no way of getting rid of this one.

before you go blaming the rifle, rings, or scope, how about you shim the scope and try again.
shimming scopes is *not* a fault of any manufacturer, and needs to be done on occasion.
Let me google that for you <-- this is a ******* link, **** you pnwguns and your ******* non-showing ******* links. ****. fuckity **** **** ****.

Yeap, top one just mines in the gray tint instead of the natural color.

I dont mind shimming for up down adjustment but the left right is bad as well and that means i'll have to buy a diff set of rings with windage adjustment right? Thing is is that this scope is has a 50mm objective so I need xx-tall rings for it to sit right. I like how it sits to the gun since the chamber to barrel drop is pretty low on this rifle.

I just figured for being slightly on the higher price side of .17's it would be ok with different ammo brands and the mounting holes would be a little closer aligned to the bore. Im going to make a call to customer service and ask them about the ammo brand thing because I have not seen this as a common issue they have when I googled it.

So I thought I would finally post and update to this thread. I started this nearly a year ago now and have since sent the rifle into Savage for repairs. I paid shipping, about $25, and included a detailed letter with the problems i was having and some example cases to show the light strikes etc. A few weeks went by and I received the rifle back, they paid return shipping, with the rifle they included a receipt with some various small parts repairs etc etc.

Moving along I was excited to get back out to the range and get some shooting done. What do you know, it still misfires about 1-3 rounds for every 5 round magazine regardless of the brand of ammunition.

So basically I'm no further ahead then when i began this post. I will need to call Savage back and see what can be done. My biggest issue is if I have to pay shipping again, the overall cost of the rifle has increased 12% due to Savages build quality. Still kicking myself for not buying a CZ.

My results are very different. I bought a MKII FVT (target peep sights) and so far with maybe 3000+ rds down the tube the rifle has been outstanding in every way. Its more accurate then I am. I have it in a custom built stock (I built it) and run both the Williams Target Peeps and a Mueller 4.5-14X 40mm Mildot APT scope.

I can shoot all day long touching the bull on an A-17 target (.177" D) with any round I don't screw up at 50ft. At 50 yards I can put them inside a nickel.

I dont dissagree with the accuracy. See the target I attached. It's just this particular rifle has been a huge pain with all the warranty repairs its been needing.

Def not saying the design is over all is bad, I know a couple others that have the same one and seem to enjoy theirs problem free. I will say having shot and handled both, the CZ over all is of better quality.

Well I havent exactly been proactive about sending it back as soon as possible, I mean it's been sitting for quite a while. I've been putting some rounds through it, just been some what frustrating having the continual misfires.

To answer the question, I've had it in one time and it is now on its way back for the second try. Last time they checked headspace and replaces "small parts" in the bolt. Which I would think would be a fix for the issue. I mean I've seen, or heard, this with other products. Seems like some things just have some crazy voodoo  curse on them and are just lemons for life. I made a mention on the phone and in the required letter with the rifle about the possibility of a replacement rifle instead of gunsmith work.
