Cowboy Action Shooters

not an expert but I love single action 45 LC / 45 acp pistols.

I've shot it before, they have all sorts of classes. I shot in the modern class because one of the pistols I used had adjustable sites. That pistol was a Ruger blackhawk bisley in .45LC. Basically you need two pistols built in the SAA colt style, they don't have to be in the same caliber, My week side gun was a Ruger SSM Vaquaro in 32H&R. You'll need a rifle chambered in a pistol caliber that was designed before 1900,Mine was a model 63 Rossi lever gun in 45lc. You'll also need a shotgun, if it's a pump it's got to have an exposed hammer. If it's a double barrel it's got to extract but not eject the spent cases. Best thing to do is read the rule book on line , show up at a match with whatever you got and start shooting. Usually the first match is free, and everyone is very helpful. When I did it an old guy told me to follow him and he'd show me what to do. he even let me shoot his shotgun because my model 37 Ithica wasn't legal for the match. I'd missed the part about the exposed hammer on a pump shotgun.

I Use vaqueros other people use colt replicas rather than the real items Black powder is also used in different colts

I'm moving in that general direction too.
I have my two Vaqueros and have now started to look at Shotguns and rifles. But I have to wait for discretionary spending to catch up with my champagne tastes.
I have a SS NM Vaquero in 45 with 4-5/8 barrel and a SS Vaquero in 45 with a 3-3/4 barrel and BH grip
I do have a lever action Marlin but it's in 30-30 and several shot guns but no SxS double barrels.

Is that the one they call a "Thumb buster"?

Not sure on that term. But this and one other shotgun are the only ones capable of SLAM FIRE Keep the trigger pulled in and just pump. Fires on every pump. Slam Fire is a beautiful thing

My friend had a pump shotgun and if you did not watch where you put your right hand thumb (on the stock), when you pumped another round in the slide/cocking gizmo that came back would nail your thumb. Hence the name "Thumb Buster"

i just bought the Cimmaron Evil Roy and it is amazing!!!!!!!! the action and trigger on this gun is rediculous!!!!!

First post.....4 shooters in the family

Howdy, by way of introduction I am a CAS (Cowboy Action Shooter) and so is my kids and my wife. We have a myriad of single-action pistols in our gun safe that we use. I shoot a pair of Ruger New Vaqueros, my oldest son shoots Ruger Vaqueros, my youngest son shoots Great Western II with birdshead grips, (they are models of the Colt with the lightening grips), and my wife shoots Cimarron Model P juniors in .38. I just recently purchased a set of Ruger Bisley Vaqueros that are going to be awesome!!!(once they come back from the grip maker). My wife and youngest son do not care for the weight and balance of the Vaqueros.

We all shoot in seperate classes, I shoot in the Gunfighter class, my oldest shoots in the B-Western class, my wife shoots in an age based category as does my youngest.

In my opinion it is definately one of the funnest shooting sports out there. Aside from the dressing up portion of the game I have never been to another shooting game where the other competitors have taken their gear off and shared there main match guns with a complete stranger and his kids. Nobody knew us, had no idea who we were or what we were about they loaned us the gear to shoot our first match instead of just letting us watch. we were invited to shoot, we were approached on the sidelines and handed guns and leather. That one day brought 4 new shooters into the game and a large gun bill into my life! :mfclap:

In short, this is one game that is a blast to play.

You might want to check out the SASS web site. They have a classified section a section with a lot of good info. Lots of good people there willing to give their opinion on Cowboy Shooting. Just do a search with google with the key word SASS. I have only competed in the Cowboy shoot for two years, but it is lots of fun, good people and food!
