I am starting an IDPA 101 class. This class is specifically based for those who want to start shooting IDPA matches for fun, practice or competition. This is NOT a Defensive Handgun class and nothing in this class should be considered "training" for any Defensive Handgun situations.

IDPA is the International Defensive Pistol Association. They put on matches/competitions all over the country. The basic principle is to put on matches using common everyday defensive carry guns and gear. So you won't see or compete against any "race guns" with optic red dot sights and compensator's. IDPA is not training but it is great practice for gun handling skills and shooting. You get to shoot and move, move while shooting, shoot multiple targets, shoot moving targets, shoot from kneeling and prone positions. IDPA is a competition because you are timed and scored each time you shoot. But you don't have to shoot it as a competition, a lot of people shoot it just for the practice and don't care what their final score is at the end of the day.

So you can get an idea of what happens during a match, here is a video from my last matches in Puyallup and Oak Harbor.

NWSA Oak Harbor IDPA 05/26/12 - YouTube

This class is based toward people who have never shot any type of pistol match before and will focus on IDPA rules and regulations. So we would start from Range Commands and basic drawing and reholstering your gun. We will also cover; Safety and Range Procedures, Equipment & Gear, Divisions & Classifications, Basic Shooting Drills & Reloading Techniques, Stage Procedures, Scoring & Penalties, Shooting from Cover & Target Engagement. At the last part of the class we will setup two IDPA legal stages and shoot them and score them as if they were a real match.

Limited video of yourself (if wanted) will be available shooting the last stage at the end of the day, time and weather permitting.

Right now the class dates are; Friday June 22nd, Sunday July 8th and Wednesday July 18th. I will add more dates if the interest is there. The class will start at 11am and end about 5pm. I expect the class to take about 6 hours and 300 rounds of ammo should be enough.

The classes will be held at Renton Fish & Game Club. The cost is $45 per person.

IDPA 101 Equipment List

• Your own handgun. Any caliber as long as you have a holster and mag pouches for it.

• Three magazines or speedloaders, plus a belt holder or pouch for them. The more the better

That's great Damon!

If you haven't shot with him, Damon is a great guy, and very enthusiastic about the sport. I'm sure you'll enjoy the class.

(I can bring my .22 racegun in an open-class holster, right?)
