Best Holster Brand

So a good point was brought up in another thread and I feel it warrants it's own conversation:

For holsters, there are tons of brands out there. Everything from $5 junk you can find on eBay, up to $1000+ custome setups made from Italian leather.

But for the average joe, what's a solid holster that will stand up to daily use and be a good value for the money?

It is not a question of being a "good value for the money" It's a question of what works for you, with your pistol, and your body shape. Buy the wrong one and it can get you dead.
Personally, I like Galco and Kramer.

Whichever one fits you and your needs the best.

I've had luck with holsters like Uncle Mikes, Galco, Blackhawk, Bladetech, etc. I've also had bad luck with all the same brands.

You can't treat holsters as a buy once and forget it kinda thing. I've gone through several holsters per pistol trying to find the right one. What I found in the end, is each holster has certain qualities that make it good for certain situations (but not all).

What he said.

Do you prefer inside the waisband? Outside the waistband? Both? Not sure? Do you prefer leather, textile or plastic? Retention or not? There are myriad of choices out there, you'll likely have to do some experimenting to find one you like and are comfortable with.

Of course there's always Mexican carry, but that's is not recommended for auto pistols.

See above. Galco, Blackhawk, Kramer... Get what fits your needs, fits your body, fits your gun, fits your activity.

Thanks for the insight.

I have a .40 that I want to carry and I need something that will hold it close to my body. I'm not exactly a tiny guy, so i want something that holds it up high. Don't wear jackets much, so although I'd love a shoulder holster, it's out of the question.

And unfortunately, no IWB stuff. I may try a small of back holster, but I doubt it'll work like I want.

I either need to lose some weight or get a smaller pistol for carrying. :hmpf:

Why no IWB?

If not wearing jackets then IWB is probably the best way to conceal and still have fast access. Just wear an untucked shirt with an IWB. An OWB with an untucked shirt does not usually cover the whole gun unless its a long shirt. With a IWB you just need to cover to just below the belt line.

My EDC is a XD-9 Service in a Kramer #3 IWB. But like most other people I have many holsters for different carry and purpose. I like to use a BladeTech OWB for IDPA/IPSC and a Kramer OWB for training classes.

Don't want the gun rubbing up against my stomach. I could probably get away with a SOB holster, but haven't found one to try out yet.

You don't have to have it against your stomach. You can place it where ever it is comfortable. I carry mine at 3:30-4:00, right behind my hip. I have always carried there comfortably even when I was 8o lbs overweight.

The biggest problem with SOB is if you fall on it. There are stories of people getting spine damage from falling when carrying with a SOB holster. But then again those are stories, I don't personally know anyone hurting their back from falling with a SOB holster. But the draw is a lot slower then with a IWB or OWB.
