heat maps are pretty neat, but I was expecting the numbers to be different than the survey...I guess Seattle really is Seattle afterall...

Yeah, it's actually a pretty goofy piece of reporting.

  • The article says, "In total, around 370,000 Washingtonians have the legal right to carry a handgun outside their home.", but the vast majority of Washington State residents are legally allowed to carry outside their homes -- just not concealed.
  • CPL does NOT equal gun ownership (growing up we had so many family friends with guns, rifles & shotguns -- but I don't believe ANY had CPLs).
  • It calls out areas that are "under-armed" and vulnerable (at least with their poor correlation of CPLs to firearms).
  • Generally has inferences all over the place...
I sincerely doubt there is any significant correlation between gun ownership and CPLs.

I've never had a CPL and know plenty of shooters who don't carry...
That's what I'm talking about.

To be fair, I don't recall asking friends if they have CPLs but I know an awful lot of gun owners/shooters that I don't think have CPLs. Just seems odd that they'd create this story like that.

Maybe I'm just jaded though...

While many people who own guns don't have their CPL, on the flip side, there are plenty of CPL holders that do not actually carry regularly. Some people just get it to make it easier to buy a handgun, or so as not to have to worry about storage on the way to and from shooting, etc...

The concept that # of permits = # of guns is assinine.

I wonder what it would look like if you overlayed a map of crime statistics onto this map? What kind of correlations would we find?

And while you don't have to have a permit to carry a gun, the areas (Seattle) with the least permits would also be the least likely to open carry. Sheep like to live in herds, right?

I love this quote from the assistant chief of police: “We always encourage people to not take the law into their own hands. We always encourage them to call police if they think they see something they believe is illegal or is in fact illegal or suspicious,” said Assistant Chief Jim Pugel. Pugel said lawfully owned guns are too often misused against loved ones, in suicides or accidentally fired by children or their visiting friends.

What a tool.
