This.Not surprised.
People keep bitchin about price gouging.... but the stuff is selling.
There's a big difference between paying MSRP and waiting 12 months (and the chance that it's be legal then), or paying 2x MSRP and getting it in your hot little hands right now.
Nobody has to pay those prices. The fact that they are paying, is just basic economics.
Most new guns are 12+ months out if your order them. No wonder used gun prices are higher - they're available now!
I could list my AR for $1500 right now, but I'd get 50 people wanting it in the first hour. Once it turns into a bidding war, I'd have no problem taking the highest bid.
I see your point pete.. but it's a very unstable market that is in a place of panic/frenzy buying.
Obviously it goes to the state of our nation.. and how people feel about the 2nd.
It's like any other sport.. boats and bikes are worth a premium in spring.. and die down during summer.
Here's another scenario for ya:
Dirt bikes are liscenseable. Lots of guys have some great Liscensed bikes. New legislation comes up that takes these plates away, but grandfathered bikes can keep their plates.
Guys would be scrambling their asses off to get bikes registered.. Pricing (locally) would go up for hardware/parts to get the bike legal. Bikes that were pre registered would be worth a premium.
Now make that a national mandate vs. local state model..
the **** would be crazy.. not as bad as guns, but it would affect pricing. Possibly indefinitely?
During the last ban that ended in 1994 Pre-Ban became a actual term that held value.. it meant a gun was "grandfathered" that value stayed in place until the ban ended..
so ***** if you want, but the **** you had is worth more.. the **** you want to buy has gotten more expensive.. it could be short term or not.
Ok I'll play... so if it normally cost say $100 to get a bike plated, and in light of new legislation the price goes up to $1000, I simply wouldn't pay that much on principle alone. I'd get over it and stick to trails rather than get raped in the ass with no lube. Nor would I pay a ridiculous price for a used bike just because it was plated. Just not worth it, at least to me.
I liken this bullshit to other bullshit like assholes selling bottled water for $5 or more at events. I'm cool with people making a profit and all, but there's making a profit, and outright gouging just because you can get away with it. You can buy like 24 or 36 packs of water for $4 at any grocery store. Charging a dollar a bottle would be a HUGE profit margin already, $5 is just highway robbery and pure greed. If someone running one of those drink stands caught on fire, I'd charge them $100 to piss on them to put it out... or maybe I'd just let em burn.
So yeah, I have equal disdain for people gouging prices on guns & ammo etc because they think they can, and there's suckers willing to pay. There is no way in hell I would 5 times what I know a gun or ammo is really worth. These aren't real world supply & demand prices, these are bullshit capitalism at it's very worst prices, and I won't pay on principal alone. I just won't be buying any more guns any time soon or do much shooting this year, unless this crap blows over and things get back to normal.
