Buying handgun ammo for a rifle under 21

Well last night I went to walmart. They had 9mm ammo. When she rang it up she only asked if I was over 21. I explained to her the law and about my carbine, she said she had never heard of 9mm rifle. We butted heads and I offered to show her the gun manufacturers website and the ATF saying it was okay to sell hangdun caliber ammo for rifles to people over 18 but not yet 21. Eventually my logic won and she stopped trying to convince me that I was trying to scam her. She then just said no, she wouldn't be able to sell it for me so I asked for a manager. The manager was confused. She said it SHOULD ask if it's for a handgun or rifle and it instead merely asked if I was 21 or not. She is going to talk to the day time manager today for me as she wouldn't just tell the computer I'm 21 because it was unethical, which I kind of understand. So today we will see how their conversation goes.

The system should ask if it's for a rifle or pistol first, then the age question if needed. Years back, that's how they asked me... but I think I was buying 22lr at the time, not 9mm.

Either way, the "system" should allow her to key in an 18yo buying rifle ammo, regardless if it's 9mm or not.

That was my understanding and what the assistant manager told me, but the computer just skipped that step.

Weird that the computer missed that step, because it is the first question I get when buying ammo from Wallyworld. So they didn't sell it to you even after the assistant mgr. agreed with you?

Yep. And today the manager of the store told me that's weird and he would send a message to corporate and then stopped talking... I asked him when it would be resolved and he said it would be on corporate to fix it and they would email him three days after he contacted them that they are working on it. I said well how will I know when you fix it? He told me to come back in a week and a half or two weeks... I hung up on him before I said something rude.

Reminds me of the Hemingway poem, The Age Demanded-

The age demanded that we sing
and cut away our tongue.

The age demanded that we flow
and hammered in the bung.

The age demanded that we dance
and jammed us into iron pants.

And in the end the age was handed
the sort of **** it demanded.
