Hi all,

I'm gearing up for Hunting Season (Deer) this year, but I haven't been hunting in Washington since 1997. After I joined the Military, I hunted maybe 5 times, mostly in Mississippi.

From those of you who hunt frequently, can you make a list of things I should know and remember? I have the WDFW books, and have found most everything I need (regulation wise) in there, but....experience counts for a ton if you want to get a deer.

So....discuss.

rule #1, here in washington we only count the points on one side of a deer.

3 points on one side, 2 on the other = 3 pointer

1 point on one side, 2 on the other = 2 pointer/not legal in a 3 point minimum gmu.

Ill add onto above, we call mismatched racks differently.. 3 on one 2 on other, is a 3 by 2, or 1 by 2 for the other example. But yeah, a 4 point buck, has 4 points PER SIDE.

Identify what your going to kill, and make a clean shot in the right spot. If your asking basic questions, research also how to take care of the animal afterwards so its not wasted.

Well, I have field dressed about 20-30 deer I suppose. I'm okay at it.

Thanks for the tips. Like I said, it's been a long time, and I am just trying to brush up on my knowledge base.

Thanks.

That reminds me of another one, get a spotting scope or binocs, I hate glassing an area only to look down someone elses barrel as they are using the scope

True story: Make sure what you are shooting at is a "Deer" and not a "John Deere." One person in Montana when I lived there said they shot the tractor because it said "Deere" on the side. Yes, it was someone from a big city who moved to Montana and was on their first hunt.

I'd make sure you know the unit your hunting, and make sure your tag is good for that unit.

Different units have different requirements for animal size, so if your coming out of the woods with a buck in the truck, you better know if your driving through a unit where the buck isn't legal, and possibly be prepared to explain where you were, etc.

Other than that.. be safe, and have fun!

Where are you planning on hunting? I've hunted mostly archery and after missing a few times this year I'm thoroughly disguisted haha. There are some good areas around spokane, but if you want to get into a lot of public land head north.:)

Come on now, that's like big city folk believing all country folk marry their cousins.
