Well I'm kicking around the idea of maybe doing a weekend project on painting my Adams AR. I was curious if anyone had any tips I should know about when it comes to painting an AR.

Cheers :beerglass:

I have a few parts painted on an AR I picked up.. Its chipping, and I will end up replacing all the parts.. I can tale pics and show ya.

My assumption is, it will look cool for the first couple times you go out. Then it will chip and you'll end up recoating, or replacing!

But I could be wrong!!!!

No no, there's a right way to do it!! I want to get some of mine treated as well.. I am not sure exactly the best.. but lets see if we can figure it out?

I know of a couple guys who do coating and finishing.. cuervo on this board has been finishing guns for YEARS.. I'll see if I can get him to jump in here with reccomendations!

Here's another vid I just found testing both ceracoat and duracoat..

Most of my rifles are coated. Dura coat works ok, heat the metal first and it sets better. Cerrakote is the **** though, I have had Jose do a few and they always turn out awesome. Haven't had one hydrodipped yet but it looks real good. Guys doing it admit its spendy and needs a clear cerrakote top layer to keep it from wearing.

If its a work gun use krylon, it's going to get beat to **** and paint touches up easily, anywhere. If you are in the woods, use more green. Going to the desert, use more tan....doesn't get any easier or user friendly.

Originally I was thinking just degrease the gun, primer, and krylon. I don't need it to be overly pretty and it's supposed to be my work horse gun hence why I got an Adams Arms. The idea of quickly painting to my surroundings is kind of nice with just doing krylon. Around here it would easily be foliage green and an OD green or something dark. Just a mix of greens.

The Cerrakote idea looks pretty awesome though and it sounds really durable!

Thats pretty darn cool! I was almost thinking instead of painting the entire upper or lower. I might just paint the parts that come off like grips, stock, forend, sights, ect. Not sure just yet though. Doing the krylon route might be kind of cool since I could change it up depending on theatre.

Any coating needs something to bite. Have the parts bead blasted first and make sure the surface is degreased and dry before coating.

I have never had a problem after duracoating.
